Relocating the BOINC data directory-Windows 7 (Resolved)

I want to move the data directory from one drive to another. I suspect the way of doing that -- if it is possible-- is not dependent on the OS,but let me explain what simple hack DOESN'T work in my environment:
64 bit Windows 7 beta
I tried hacking the registry -
HKLM\software\Wow6432 Node\Space Sciences...\BOINC Setup\ DATADIR

Specifically I changed the string from "U:\Science\BOINC" to C:\Users\Bob\BOINC after copying the contents of the former folder to the desired new folder. I got all kinds of WCG grief after rebooting - password's not right, ...

Fortunately returning the registry string to its earlier setting restored operation.

Is there a way to make this change?

Re: Relocating the BOINC data directory

We recommend uninstalling BOINC and reinstalling it in this situation - it is much easier.

Set World Community Grid to "No new tasks" and let the active tasks finish if you want to avoid wasting them (you can abort unstarted tasks).

sad Re: Relocating the BOINC data directory

Help, Didactylos!

I spoke too soon. I uninstalled and deleted the data folders. I reinstalled with administrator privileges using Vista compatibility and as a service (I think that's what you had me do last time BOINC broke) and I just can NOT get past the message in the lower right, "Connecting to localhost".

As I recall, when it was working properly, it said "Connected to localhost(2.28.6) or some such number.

I felt that struggling with it myself for a couple days before asking for more of your help was the proper thing to do. Now I just want to get the machine working again on the FAAH project.

I looked back at what you asked me when I had trouble last time and see that you would like to see the sterrdae.txt contents, and I add a few other file content below:

Re: Relocating the BOINC data directory

That's not good.

Is that everything from stderrdae.txt? The stack trace is missing.

Do you use any security software? Norton, or something similar?

Re: Relocating the BOINC data directory

Greetings,

What folder in windows are you trying to run this from? If you are trying to install the data directory and app directory in a protected folder, then you may get issues. Not sure if this is what you are seeing though.

Yes that is everything. I may be running into a new W'7 incompatibility - they keep updating the beta. Here is some data from the Event Logs:

Re: Relocating the BOINC data directory

I am sure both of you are reading my replies, so I'll include in my reply to uplinger what I forgot to say in my reply to Didactylos:

I am running with AVGfree monitoring software running in the background. I have turned off my Spybot and my "Windows Defender duplication of effort".

I have asked for the data folder to be
C:\Users\Bob\Boinc
When I look at the permissions on the folder, I see that four group or user names in the Security list :{boinc_admins, boinc_users, & boinc_projects as well as Administrators}
Administrators and _admins have full control
_users have ONLY Read permission
_projects have permission to "Traverse folder/ execute file"

Thanks for trying to help when it's just a beta

shock Re: Relocating the BOINC data directory

Did you note the "CROSS THREAD" term in the binary data dump? I guess it could be the infamous programming restriction in Windows forms that forbids messing with one thread from another. I guess that would be aBOINC bug -- if that's what is going on.
