I would like to request that a read-only thread be started which only scientists and techs can post to. This would allow everyone to quickly see project status without having to sift through running commentary - updates tend to become lost in the clutter. Thank you for your consideration, and the opportunity to put my extra cycles to use.

I'd appreciate this read-only thread strongly. It would be much more informative than threads with one scientific post and lots of thank-you-for-your-update replies...

Hi, actually on one hand a good idea, on the other hand, traditionally interaction with the project scientists upon posting of updates in encouraged.
----------------------------------------For those who like to find ALL the scientists posts quickly, refer to Posts by Science Project Representatives providing an access point to them all from oldest to newest. The future forum software will have stickies for contributions we'd like to stay on top though and I'm sure that function will be utilized to keep their posts at the top. [offtopic]The badge comments in pretty much every thread we look these days start to become a little detracting. If we can keep threads ON-TOPIC. Enough been said too about the work supply. That has a thread too, and is exactly why it becomes difficult to follow any discussion anywhere... they are all over the place. Thanks all for their restraint in this matter. /offtopic]

Some of us older and grumpier crunchers find it very irritating to read an important posting by a project scientist followed by a stream of 'thank you for this info' messages which add no value and just spam up the dialogue. Perhaps the problem is an educational one. I've done computer conferencing for over thirty years starting with the IBM VM network and the guidance there was 'if you have nothing to say then say nothing.' Perhaps the CAs could encourage more of this attitude here.

I don't think so. This is a social forum, as well as a technical forum. Posts with little content may not be valuable to you, but they still have value. They aren't strictly off-topic.
Yes, WCG need to work harder to make status updates visible and relevant - but they are making progress in this area. Why not raise the level of dialogue? Asking the scientists relevant questions is a good way to keep these threads interesting for everyone. |

Well, how about just a hyperlink pointing to the 'Latest status update' post (not just thread)? The link could be placed in the heading of the main column called 'Thread'.
----------------------------------------I know this would add the extra task for web staff to ensure that the link does always point to the most recent update but it would save so much time for those of us looking for news, and it would cut out all these posts asking why no units have been received. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Baywhale at Apr 11, 2009 11:59:19 AM] |
