Just thought I would share the amazing preformance of these new processors in the blade. I'm running Windows Server 2008 and it shows 16 Cores available to use. BOINC uses everyone. I was really impressed how it hammers through 16 task at a time and completes them all in less than 5hrs. I also put on a BL465 G5 (AMD Dual Quad Core) to see the difference. The AMD hammers through 8 tasks at a time but completes them all in less than 6 hours. Still pretty amazing.

Question: how is the power consumption on these? I am running on an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.20 GHz (Lenovo T61p laptop) Averaging 40 w power consumption with the lid closed. I can hammer though 2 nutritious rice for the world units in 7 hours. That's .14 kwH per unit.
----------------------------------------I was considering getting a blade, but if a stack of laptops can get through the units with less power consumption, maybe that is the way to go. (Especially if you are working on the "clean energy" project :-) BTW, I use a Kill a watt EZ to monitor my power. You can get them cheaper at Amazon. Do not buy the 4400 (non EZ). They do not retain totals when unplugged. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dadinck at May 21, 2009 4:50:32 PM] |

Rice is a much different project ... it will always complete a WU at the first checkpoint after 7 hours so you can not really compare your lappy to the blade in number of watts/ WUs processed. I think the best you could try is for watts / number of points but there will always be a fudge factor due to how points are calculated. If you run both machines with the same project you could try watts/ wus but there is variability between tasks within individual projects so you still have a bit of estimating going on.
----------------------------------------WOW almost forgot ... congratulations on that super cruncher !!! ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Steve WCG at May 21, 2009 10:03:31 PM] |
