I've been on WCG for almost 2 years and I gradually started becoming obsessed with points. So I bought an extra machine, then another and so on so until yesterday, I had 5 quads and 1 dual core Athlon running the project.
----------------------------------------Unfortunately, my electric bill last month was just over $300. Since I use oil for heating and hot water is metered separately, there aren't a lot of suspects. My marginal rate is 18cents/kwh. The big electricity hogs are fairly new and pretty efficient. However almost all of the machines are overclocked to some extent which also raises power consumption. But even if I assume only 150watts at load (very unlikely), then for 6 machines, we get over 650 kwh/month or about $115. Since my bill was for a little more than 1700 kwh, 650 would be around 1/3 of that. Now if I'm wrong, and power usage is closer to 100watts on average, then it will be about 432kwh/month or $77.76. Not nearly as bad, but also not as likely IMHO. If I were running the machines anyway, that would be different. Then we would just be talking about the marginal cost. But 4 of the 6 are dedicated solely (or virtually so) to just WCG. I also have to consider the fact that marginal rates go up in the summer and that with central a/c, I get bumped into the third usage tier - which isn't that big of a deal, but it all adds up. So I'm going to shut down 4 of the rigs until I get at least 2 new electric bills and compare them to last year. April will be the best test since I probably won't use much a/c. I'd love to do wind or solar power and get free energy, but it's still just too darn expensive. If it turns out that I'm saving 2/3 of $115/month or more, I'll probably sell those rigs. But my 2 main machines will continue to run and with the money from the selling the others, I might think seriously about upgrading to something with an i7 type flavor. 116.64 = 648 * .18 77.76 = 432 * .18 ![]() ![]() |

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, I believe that a lot of crunchers will scale back their participation and retire a lot of boat anchors [older hardware] . . . the real strength of WCG comes from the crunchers with a computer or two who want to contribute to worthwhile projects. Individual accomplishment and sense of purpose are always in good taste. ![]() |

Hi,
wow, that's dedication. I'm new to WCG. Can I do anything with credits or points? |

My marginal rate is 18cents/kwh. Try $0.38/kwh for tier 4 in my part of California. Only the power companies are producing "results". ![]() ![]() |

For the summer I too end up in tier 4, but the difference from one tier to the next isn't much. So, stupid question. Why does anyone still live in Califorinication? At least now I know from whence comes the name. ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by twilyth at Mar 28, 2009 2:00:03 PM] |

Maybe they enjoy the earthquakes
I lived in the smog outside LA for 12 years. Still go back to visit family and eat lots of In-N-Out burgers, but wouldn't want to live there. |

i7 920 @ 3.8 will get about 4000 boinc credits per day. I bought all components about 3 weeks ago for about $1700 USD. It rips through WUs like mad

I use 8 core mac pro's (2 of them). 2 machines are easier to maintain than multiple single or dual core and believe more efficient. As the processors get smaller, less energy to use. Understand were your coming from with the economy in the tank. Got to take care of home before anything. The new i7's are a beast but never was fond of virtual cores. Crunch what you can when you can.

It's really rough because I have that junkie mentality. I'm sorry for putting it that way, but that's how I think of it. I could be on a deserted island and I would find something to obsess about.
----------------------------------------It's killing me not to check stats n' stones, boinc stats, etc every 15 minutes. And I can't go to 'my grid' for at least the next 2 weeks since the downward trend of the bar graphs will probably drive me over the edge. However I've replaced this with another addiction that is also getting out of control - Vampire Wars on face book. I may have to go cold turkey on that one too. When you start thinking about ordering from the cookbook book club so you can get favor points, you know you have a problem. So what is the best way to cash out my hardware? I don't really want to sell complete systems because I have no - repeat, no, none, nada - intention of providing anything resembling tech support. And from what I've seen on ebay, it looks like you get better prices for components anyway. Any thoughts? Any other ideas besides ebay for getting a good price? I have a web site I could list everything on - although there is nothing there but an index.htm file right now. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
