Re: Suspend Core

T&H,

Sitting back and watching the creative member juices flow... got probably 3 or 4 immediately on hand that would allow you to do this rather quick, but it requires in part doing it manually each time with risk of forgetting and needing to know a few resource use bits about the specific sciences you run.

As for the trick-box of features BOINC is missing and the undisputed chief of development at Berkeley won't have:

X cores Idle and Active
X % CPU time idle and active

The BOINC throttle is c.r.a.p. (cant really advice properly), so I use tools as ThreadMaster GUI and TThrottle to manage temperature yet have smooth computing at lower percent.

Yes sure, many wont notice BOINC, except if the hardware/OS is not up to it and never getting beyond wordpad editing, so if seriously interested, I'll open pandora's box.

Re: Suspend Core

I was thinking that at least for me it may be good enough to maintain a couple of global_prefs.xml files and switch them in and out based on my preference at the time via a script. Just a couple of clicks.
This would free up enough resources to do what has to be done.

Of course it would be nice If I could just select them from the menu instead.

Since I am new at this am I correct in assuming the global_prefs gets called at the point you toggle the activity option in the Bionic Manager and that it controls behavior.
Does the definition change often? Is there documentation?

I don't want to play with it much if I have a good chance of messing it up but I do this type of thing for a living.

Better not touch these control files directly: they are essential for Boinc's operation and you might really mess things much.
But you can achieve what you want safely and as quickly from BoincMgr.

From the advance view select Advanced->Preferences->Processor usage and change "Use at most 100 % of processors" from 100 % to 99 % (or anything between 75 and 99 %). Then click OK and you are done.

The very first time also check in the "Disk and memory usage" tab that the box "Leave applications in memory while suspended" is checked. That will avoid that the task which will be suspended be unloaded and lose the processing done since the previous checkpoint.

When you want to reactivate the fourth processor simply do the same and enter 100 % in place of 99 %. That's it.

Once you are familiar with this scenario that should take you only a few seconds. The effect is immediate.
Be not surprised that all tasks are suspended for 30 seconds just after you click OK: every time the number of processors is changed Boinc reruns the performance benchmark.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Suspend Core

Thanks, but my original suggestion was to try and avoid this. I find myself doing that 20-40 times a week(Off/ON). I find myself just wanting to hit suspend, which is a waste of cycles.

It would be much better to switch among multiple sets of preferences from the activity menu item. Then you can control number of cores and memory usage for various user scenarios.

This looks like the main development page, Correct?

Re: Suspend Core

Ah, the 4th way of achieving this: You can script by creating multiple global_prefs_override.xml files and utilizing the boinccmd tool to activate / read in the settings.

Re: Suspend Core

I can work with that. I should be able to make it do what I want.

Thanks
