I looked for something like this in the forum but the searches didn't turn up anything. Apologies if this is a dupe.
I was running BOINC 6.2.28 on a Gateway quad core running Vista Home Premium. I had a power failure and lost the session. I rebooted normally and was nonplussed to find that everything seems to have disappeared. No work units and I get the topic message. I tried a repair install, then a complete delete and install, same story. Anyone else have a clue? Thanks. |

It sounds like you have this problem: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Unable_to_connect_to_the_core_client
Please follow the troubleshooting steps described there, and don't hesitate to ask again if you need further help. |

OK, no child processes detected in task manager and no error file anywhere on the computer.
I tried to run boinc.exe under a cmd window and got an exception error, but it ran off the screen and I have no idea how to capture it. Piping to a text file only got me the first 4 lines and none of the error dump. |

you can make a .BAT file in the same folder with following text:
----------------------------------------boinc.exe then run this BAT file and see all error lines. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by rilian at Mar 22, 2009 6:53:40 PM] |

What do you mean "ran off the screen"? The Vista command window has scrollbars, and will keep hundreds of lines.
However, you should find the error log in the data directory. You may need Administrator rights to view it. C:\ProgramData\BOINC is the default on Vista. |

The error dump appears to be more like a thousand lines, and by the time I can get it stopped the important bits toward the beginning have scrolled off the top.
There is no error file being created when I attempt an execute in cmd. |

Start BOINC with the --redirectio switch.

Start BOINC with the --redirectio switch. OK, I'll try that after I post this. After consulting with a coworker who knew about cmd, I have the error file via the 2> pipe. This is not the complete file, I cut it off after it became apparent it's repeating. OK, did this under cmd. Computer thought about it for about 10 seconds, then came back with a command prompt. No other data. BOINC Manager is still empty, Task manager has boincmgr.exe and boinctray.exe but no clients.
