Status question

Just received my first batch on my octo mac. In the status, it shows waiting for share memory instead of ready to run for the new wu's. Something new?

Re: Status question

Nothing new. Autodock can use over 100MB, so it isn't ideal to have 8 processes running at the same time. If you have other programs using a lot of memory, BOINC will unload some tasks.

You can set the percentage of memory to allow BOINC to use in your preferences.

Re: Status question

I crunch with 7 cores. Leave 1 free to take care of the OS. Looked weird seeing that so thought I would post. Only 3 of the new wu's show that. The rest show ready.

Re: Status question

Looking back at your first post, I see you said "waiting for share memory".

It's possible you have run across a Mac-specific issue with limited shared memory slots.

Did you reboot?

Re: Status question

I did after reading your post. Won't know until I download the next batch if that was the culprit. Could it be v 5.10 the cause?

Re: Status question

Hello Bearcat,
Here is a 2007 thread about the Mac OS X limit of 8 shared memory segments. Presciently, they say that this will really bother BOINC if a Mac ever has 8 cores. It discusses ways to increase the number of shared memory segments in Mac OS X.
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1871

I vaguely remembered reading this when it came out.
Lawrence

Added: It links to 'Configuring Shared Memory on Mac OS X ' by Spy Hill Research at http://www.spy-hill.net/help/apple/SharedMemory.html This gives a sample which multiplies everything in shared memory by 4. I see no reason to increase the allowed segment size from 4 MB to 16 MB nor any reason to increase the minimum size. However, it IS important to change the number of allowed shared memory segments from 8 (4 per core on a dual-core cpu) to 32 (4 per core on an octo-core cpu).

Re: Status question

Thanks for the info. Not sure I want to make that change as boinc is the only program that seems to have this problem. I read the info and was posted being fixed in 5.10 but I see there error message in v6 of boinc too so not sure what I plan to do. I just don't know what it will do to the rest of the programs not having this problem. Am going to try dropping to 6 cores crunching but something tells me this won't work. Have to check with other mac crunchers to see if they see this problem and if they did this fix.

Re: Status question

BTW, this is the only project this happens in. Could it be this project being the problem?
