Traditionally every project has a thread for news articles. To start this thread, I will post a link to the Wiki article titled 'Neuroblastoma" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroblastoma
----------------------------------------It says that 90% of the neuroblastoma patients are under 5 years old when diagnosed. Neuroblastoma accounts for 15% of all childhood cancer deaths. Added: eMedicine article about neuroblastoma : http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/988284-overview http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Cancertype/Chi...renscancers/Neuroblastoma US National Cancer Institute : http://www.cancer.gov/cancerinfo/types/neuroblastoma/ [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 13, 2009 7:03:58 PM] |

This is the disease that took the life of my Five Year Old Great Nephew. It was the reason that I joined Grid Org in those far off days, I am delighted that WCG has taken up the challenge! Thank you all.

I lost my son to a brain tumor (not neuroblastoma though) in 1993 aged 5. He was diagnosed 3 days before his second birthday. During that period we came into contact with lots of other parents in the same position as we found ourselves.
----------------------------------------What really struck me was the children's reaction to the illness - even after major surgery they wanted to be up and playing. ![]() |

The 4th way to fight cancer, vaccines, found further potential applicability with one of the targets, neurobalstoma:
----------------------------------------Immune therapies finally working against cancer http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090531/ap_on_he_me/us_med_cancer_vaccines By MARILYNN MARCHIONE, AP Medical Writer Marilynn Marchione, Ap Medical Writer – Sun May 31, 12:19 pm ET ORLANDO, Fla. – First there was surgery, then chemotherapy and radiation. Now, doctors have overcome 30 years of false starts and found success with a fourth way to fight cancer: using the body's natural defender, the immune system. The approach is called a cancer vaccine, although it treats the disease rather than prevents it. At a cancer conference Sunday, researchers said one such vaccine kept a common form of lymphoma from worsening for more than a year. That's huge in this field, where progress is glacial and success with a new treatment is often measured in weeks or even days. Experimental vaccines against three other cancers — prostate, the deadly skin disease melanoma and an often fatal childhood tumor called neuroblastoma — also gave positive results in late-stage testing in recent weeks, after decades of struggles in the lab. "I don't know what we did differently to make the breakthrough," said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld of the American Cancer Society. Instead of a single "A-Ha!" moment, there have been many "ah, so" discoveries about the immune system that now seem to be paying off, said Dr. John Niederhuber, director of the National Cancer Institute

From a letter by Lucy Jones, circulated in Australia by snail mail in November 2010, seeking donations to Children's Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA):
"In a breakthrough, CCIA researchers have developed a potential drug for neuroblastoma called Reversan. It's designed to switch off a cancer-associated gene called MRP-1, which is found in high levels in children with aggressive, drug-resistant neuroblastoma. ACRF Drug Discovery Centre Director, Professor Murray Norris and his team hope to show Reversan can work, without any nasty side effects. CCIA is also researching an anti-cancer drug called DFMO, which has shown great promise in pre-clinical trials. In the next few months, 30 children being treated for neuroblastoma in Australia and the U.S. will begin early stage clinical trials of DFMO in combination therapy."
