Are the researches being ran be really helpful to human?

Hi all,

Please forgive me first if you think my question is stupid or silly. But after staying with WCG for about half year time, and contributing my home PC computing power to the some researches in the WCG.

I start to think if the researches being ran here are really useful to human, or this is only a platform providing computing resources to those researchers who require extra resource (e.g not enough budget, or computing resource is scheduled to other high priority projects...etc).

Please forgive me if you think I am offending the spirit of WCG here...but do you think any motivation here can let me continuously contribute to the WCG?

As I worked for an institution before for some researches before, and I know there were many many researches only serving the purpose of "producing research papers" to academic fields.

I am really confused. crying

Anyone has the same feeling before. Please kindly share it with me.

Thanks,
Raymond

Re: Are the researches being ran be really helpful to human?

Warning: the following statements are my personal opinion (I am speaking for myself, not for WCG) and they are general (I am not thinking of any project in particular).

1. Nothing guarantees that a given project will result in a major breakthrough for research, or in a wonderful cure for any of the diseases we are helping to fight.

2. On the other hand nothing forbids a project whose purpose would be academic for its authors from being useful to other scientists for achieving tangible results in their own research. As long as the results of all these projects are public domain everything is possible.

Keep hope as we do. Jean.

Re: Are the researches being ran be really helpful to human?

Hi, SonyRaymond.

The project selection process is very rigorous. Projects must meet the following Selection Criteria:

1. Project has specifically stated goals and anticipated results and explains how the work will significantly contribute to the eradication of human suffering or benefit humanity. World Community Grid welcomes projects that demonstrate the potential to assist economically disadvantaged communities and developing countries, or to provide the initial research that can open new fields of inquiry that benefit humanity.
2. Project meets grid computing technical requirements and is grid-enabled. The project shows evidence that the project results will be accelerated by the use of grid computing technology.
3. Project has adequate funding to complete the proposed research and leverage World Community Grid.
4. Project is not already running on another grid or supercomputer.
5. Sponsoring research institution has the capacity to complete the project and maximize the use of the results generated through World Community Grid.
6. All information in the proposal is complete and accurate.

And that's just for the initial proposal! The proposal is then evaluated by at least two qualified reviewers. Finally, the proposal must be approved by the Advisory Board.
