A few questions about our achievement...

Well, i just had an idea to return to WCG after about 2years...but i just noticed, that nothing has really changed in this long period of time.
We have done lots of work, but where are the rusults?
I mean the real results in the real world, like a new medicine, or a new kind of useful protein, that has been created in the lab with the help of this project(or maybe some other project of WCG), or something like this. Not just some article on some web page...

Re: A few questions about our achievement...

Research takes time, Anton. Lots of time. We can split the lifetime of a project into 4 phases:

1. Preparation before the launch (6 months - 1 year)
2. Grid computation (6 months - many years)
3. Analysis of the results (1 year +)
4. Preparation of results and journal articles (1 year +)

The time estimates will vary a lot from project to project, and some steps may overlap. For example, FightAIDS@Home has been running on the grid for over three years, and has already begun to publish based on the early results.

See the World Community Grid publications here: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Publications

Re: A few questions about our achievement...

Hello Didactylos,

Thank you for responding so rapidly. Your estimate of the duration of each of these 4 phases was incredibly accurate. And since the experiments we have been performing on FightAIDSatHome during the last year are much more complicated than the early experiments, it takes us a longer time to prepare, process, and analyze these results. In addition, all members of the FAAH team also have several other projects that we need to advance at the same time as we perform these experiments on the WCG.

Anton, drug discovery research takes a lot of time and hard work. It usually takes a pharmaceutical company 8 to 20 years and over a billion dollars to discover and develop a new drug. And pharmaceutical companies have hundreds of people and far more resources to devote to each project. In addition, at FightAIDSatHome we are not just looking for a decent new drug---we are trying to develop new inhibitors that will work against the multi-drug-resistant "super bugs" and make it more difficult for new super bugs to evolve. It's a tough job. Please be patient with us.

Within the next 3 months, we will start to analyze the results of Experiments 21 and 22 (see http://fightaidsathome.scripps.edu/status ). We are planning to focus on these results next, since they might have the most potential.

Please continue to help us crunch these calculations. If we haven't made significant progress towards the areas you mentioned within the next year or two, then you have every right to be disappointed.

Thanks for your help,
Dr. Alex Perryman

Re: A few questions about our achievement...

Also, let's not forget that every experiment or discovery might not have a practical result until much later (sometimes centuries).

Sometimes practical result is in addition to another experiment or discovery, so you don't know really when the benefits of our work here will hit in but what is sure is that our efforts are not in vain and they are advancing research and discoveries even if it is trough failures.

I say all results we crunch are winning results. All results advance significantly science as a hole.

Re: A few questions about our achievement...

And yet, unfortunately, Anton the AIDS Fighter still doesn't seem willing to contribute - as he/she still hasn't returned a new result...

So, although we're all greatful and appreciative of all the 335 results you've returned so far, we'd all appreciate it even more if you'd help us crunch some more wink

After all, every little helps - and who knows, the 1 new result you return, may just help towards a new drug/cure...

On a slightly different topic, may I also add my thanks to Dr. Perryman for keeping us up to date with progress.
