A very good question
---------------------------------------- I assume when you click on Projects pageyou are not identified???? I have had this on a machine that was running okay till I upgraded it to 6.2.28 , I think, but not too sure you have to go to tools and attach to project . if it cant see who you are it cant send you work. hope this is of use.... >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I had the car to the dealers today for MOT. it passed Okay they offered to do a full body Wax( the car not me) only wanted a £ton Its a red car the top surface is now faded dusky red/ pink. I Should have remembered the last red car I had it did the same >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Did any one see on the news and in the papers yesterday the estate agents in Kent trying to sell a cottage on a nature reserve ??? wonderful seaside location 300yards from the sea close to local pub and fishermen's cottages . £247.000. ono If you stand on the Roof and you can see France and watch ships passing by. Draw backs? the drive is an unmade track and there is a large industrial building close by http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/ho...uclear-power-station.html The news item sort of hints that Gearing and Colier the agents were trying to pull the wool over prospective buyers eyes. The two power stations are visible for miles and have been there since 1962 . The only buildings there at that time were the Pilot http://www.thepilot.uk.com/holystones.htm http://www.thepilot.uk.com/holystones.htm The old and new Lighthouse a dozen old railway carriages used by weekend fishermen, a collection of tarred weatherboard huts where the the local fisher men lived Only two familys lived on the point the Tarts And the Oilers they were the crew for the Life boat which was housed in the Lifeboat station poised to plunge into the foamy briny The Lifeboat station had to be moved forward every few years as the shingle kept advancing .The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch light railway had a station at Dungeness and was not a tourist toy it was used to transport passengers into Romney and Hythe for work and school . Slightly inland towards Lydd there was a terraced row of Cottages belonging to Trinity house where the Lighthouse keepers lived with their family's I stayed a couple of weeks in one of these when I first went to work at Dungeness.I also stayed in one of the old railway carriages You could almost cast a line into the sea from the front porch .Dungeness point , bisects Rye Bay and Folkstone bay two tides meet here and the area is known as the "dustbin" as it stirs up much food for the fish.A mass of Tilly lamps at night line the beach belonging to the fishermen that's rod and line types . There is an old and new light house because the Old one was obscured by the Power station so CEGB built the new Automatic unmanned Light. The old one became a tourist attraction, also featuring on the series The inspector Lynley mystery's when some one fell off the top. The lamp of the lighthouse floated on a bath of Mercury rotating as it shone its warning to shipping ( Dungeness point juts out to sea about 6 Miles) The Romney marsh being so flat the Power stations look like ships at sea from Folkstone. Mercury being a valuable metal it didn't take long for some wide boys to sus this out.Much easier than climbing on church roofs for lead the "Quick silver Gang" broke into the lighthouse one dark night with buckets climbed the stairs and bailed out the lamp bath. I don't know what a bucket of mercury weighs its heavy stuff tho Up & Down the stairs spilling it as they went to & fro they carried on until either too tired or the Van wouldn't take any more off they went and as far as I know were never seen again Famous/Infamous residents of recent years included Derek Jarman an artist who made a surreal display in the garden of one of the fisherman's huts using driftwood and things he found on the shore. The term "Garden" could only used as a word to describe land surrounding the house ,as Dungeness is a huge shingle bank only plants that can cope with little or no soil and extreme tolerance to salt . The dodgy inhabitant was a great train robber who everyone thought was a great guy very generous with his round in the pub.It was generally assumed he was a printer in the London daily's Long hours big money Found when leaving work after a night shift the roads closed by Police I'm Trying to rember his name but its gone for the moment Okay enough of the travelogue Have a nice day everyone. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by densnaps at Oct 1, 2009 3:40:15 PM] |

Evening all
Good piece Den. I don't know a lot about that neck of the woods but I do remember going by car to France via Lydd when in a period after the war somebody acquired some ex RAF transport carriers and ran a ferry service. It was a long time before the speed of that crossing was approached. |

Just to fill in some gaps in my earlier post .
----------------------------------------I know that Mercury is pretty toxic and we now have a general ban on its use even in scientific instruments such as barometers. We worry about the Mercury content in the new low energy light bulbs. What effect did the huge amount that the “Quick silver gang” must have come into contact with Maybe that’s why they were never caught ….Mad as Hatters????. Trying to find the name of the Great Train robber who was arrested down there Actually in Greatstone not Dungeness that’s only about a mile down the road towards New Romney, okay so I stretched the geographic location I think it might have been Jimmy White he evaded capture for 3 years but when eventually he did come to court got 18 years. Now out of jail, he was seen at an Eastend Gangsters funeral a couple of years ago, you might recall it large cortège a mile long with Show biz personalities amongst the mourners. Ivan’s Trip to France From Ferryfield , Lydd Airfield .Now known as London Ashford airport Talk about mistitling its at least ten miles from Ashford and 60 plus to The smoke .with no direct rail link . At the time I went to work at Dungeness the Silver City Company flew Bristol Freighters from Lydd to Le Touquet. These aircraft had an hinged opening front allowing up to three cars to load with seating for passengers,The Cockpit was above the door opening. At the time I arrived in the area people only had three local job options The airfield , the gravel quarries or the Farm. Sheep or shingle . Sheep covered the marsh large flat areas drained by Ditches known as Sewers around lambing time they were cared for by what we would call shepherds , but on the Marsh were called lookers they stayed in lookers huts It was a good idea to befriend a Looker as “Drowned Mutton” could be obtained …………. It seems that sometimes the sheep fell into the dykes/sewers ……. Waste not want not … Back to the airfield The Bristol freighters carried their cargo to Le Touquet or “tucket” as the silver city crews called it .The power station attracted several ex airfield employees so we had lots of tales on night shifts when the lamp started swinging . As well as Ivan taking the trip lots of screen and radio stars used the service. An Ivan Look alike David Niven , Diana Doors, Prime ministers. The Lord and Lady Docker, don’t think they took the gold plated Roller on board tho. t Neville Duke abit different to the aircraft he was used to . All these and many more used the 20 minute trip to hop across the channel . Not wanting the Aircraft to stand idle when not carting the tourists over the water The crew ripped out the dismountable seating and herded sheep on board When Returned to “normal Passenger service Of course Elf and safety came into play and the plane was hosed out, my pal who worked on the flights said there was however a distinctly rural atmosphere for the next few flights .As the passengers were only on the plane for 20 mins and it cost about 25 quid for car and passenger and it was too noisy to receive complaints all was well. Gravel extracted by ARC , Amalgamated Roadstone Company simple operation dig a hole it fills with water install a dredging barge and conveyor add some crushing equipment and half the roads and concrete works in England are kept supplied |

Thanks for the kind words about my rambling
---------------------------------------- I get a bit carried away sometimes >>>>>>>>> I see our leader at the top of the page keeping an eye on us >>>>>>>>>>> Today we got a Census form to fill in Yes I know its not due for another couple of years.I think they are sending these out to check how many of us can read and write .It s being sent to 130,000 households in Lancaster,Newham and Ynys Mon on Anglesey. It tells me in the notes the information contained on my return remains confidential It however does then become the Property of the National Statistics Office and will not leave the UK. It points out that it is a criminal Offence to disclose personal census data Punishable by a fine and or up to Two years in Prison. As long as the information doesn't go onto some bods computer disc I'm safe I guess ![]() |
