Points and credit?

not too sure if this belongs here. Can someone tell me the difference between WCG points and BOINC credit is?

and is there a formula for these two values?

Re: Points and credit?

Multiply by 7.

Some of the history is described here: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/United_Devices_credit_system

Didactylos, I ask some time again about it, but until now did not get answer... could you please explain what is the World Community Grid Comparison Device (Hw description...) ?

It will be great to understand in right way the points system. Thank youin advance. coffee

Re: Points and credit?

It not relevant. This is for historical information only.

Same answer I gave last time, if I recall correctly.

Re: Points and credit?

Remembering UD and googling brings that it was a Pentium 4 1.5GHz if I'm not mistaken.

Sure Baron I remember clearly, but UD now is past and for sure WCG probably have an point of view more evolved than UD static point of view, and maybe is looking for the future about technologies donated by colaborators to crunch projects. Really hope that this misterious device be distinct from UD times...

And it is relevant Didactylos once is one of standards for WCG. For me make sense a clear divulgation of it description in the table that feed the POINTS hyperlink word inside WCG web sites. coffee

Re: Points and credit?

Hi GIBA!
You are missing the point: the concept of "World Community Grid Comparison Device" was proper to the credit system of the UD agent. Now that this agent has been moved out of WCG there is no need for a "World Community Grid Comparison Device", so there is none, and so it has no technical specs.

I agree that when the techs say that "the target duration of WUs will be six hours from now on" it would be nice to know "6 hours of what", but as long as we can quickly translate it to a percentage of change (e.g. WUs will be 40 % shorter than before) I think we can live with it. smile

Cheers. Jean.

Hi Jean,
no missings from my side here, believe me... but I just provoque the deep discussion about it.

Months ago I posted a mention of problems with the text description in hyperlinks found in POINTS word across WCG web sites, but none was done since that time...

And if there isn't more a kind of comparison, there is an speciifc metric to pontuation which could be aplicable for any cruncher to reach yours points correctly ? What is this metric ? Just multiply by 7 as Didactylos mentioned ?

And appear for me that WCG need change the text description mentioned once yet appear:

" Points

The calculation of Points is the method World Community Grid uses to calculate your contribution to our Internet Distributed Computing projects.

First, the "strength" of your participating machine(s) is calculated by measuring the following parameters of your machine against the World Community Grid Comparison Device:

• CPU power
• Random Access Memory (RAM)
• Allocated and available hard disk storage space
• Effective downsteam throughput from the World Community Grid Servers to the World Community Grid Agent

The strength of the machine is then multiplied by the effective run time used to complete the work unit and successfully return the results to the World Community Grid Servers. Any parameter can overachieve the like parameter on the World Community Grid Comparison Device. However, the maximum value of your machine's overall strength will be capped at twice the value of the World Community Grid Comparison Device strength "

In this way, I think that WCG need specify clearly how calculate exactly the points ... coffee

Re: Points and credit?

Hello GIBA,
David Autumns worked out the formula that UD was using to compute UD points. I think it is in one of the oldest FAQs. Obviously, we no longer use it. To allow comparison between UD and BOINC, we decided to multiply BOINC credits by 7 after observing both running HPF for a while.

knreed can see how long it takes to run a work unit on our grid. We do not need any theoretical device with a theoretical performance. We just add up the cumulative run time and divide by the number of results.

Just as well for WCG it was a Pentium 4 @ 1.5GHz if I recall. But like others said they don't use it anymore, we're on Boinc now.
