Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

I follow the pie chart religiously .
I've notice the rice end date is getting shorter and shorter. I was 1st Q of '10 now it's down to Oct 09. Fun to watch the stats. Thanks Sek, these charts rock!

Well spotted brinktastee - so, the morale of the story is, if you want a Gold badge for NRW, you'd better get a move on biggrin

Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

Just a thought ... I was wondering if on the WCG Tasks by Day and Project if it would make sense to replace 'Date & Global CPU Years' in the X legend with the total Task Count for each day? You already have Global CPU years on the next chart anyway :-)

Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

Thanks for the suggestion, Snow Crash. The charts float separately around on the forums and wanted to convey what the CPU years are to go with that. For total results, refer to chart 16, currently.

cheers

Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

I have started building a statistical cube for WCG as a whole which will be the model for when / if I can ever get to break the numbers down by project. Currently for the runtime, points, and results data elements I have Cumulative and Averages for Total, Rolling 7, Rolling 30. I was thinking about extending it to cover 60, 90, 180 and Annual time periods but am not sure that would would be worth much as WCG trends move so quickly that at first glance it looks like anything greater than 30 is not particularly relevant. Any thoughts on time periods or other statistical models people might find interesting?

Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

Have a look at BOINCstats, AllProjects and other stats sites for what's on offer. One stats keeper asked for access to stats project/member, which is doable if the sharable verification code was provided by the member. See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=22612#194746. You could get members to register their information, so you can run their 'Pie' their stats in different ways.

Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

Suggestions for Sekerob's charts, Chart 1:
First, I am not familiar with the software that you use to generate these (excel?), so I don't know what design freedoms you have.
I prefer function over form; effective communication over gloss. (I feel lonely these days).
* Chart 1:
This will need some reorganisation as new projects arrive.
The space on Chart 1a is already very crowded for the current Current projects - HCC, ACAH and β share 1 label, and the arrowing construct is a bit obscure. How about a plain ordinary, flat, circular pie chart in the left side of the space, with a table on the right containing the logos, names and %s. Put a line from the left side of each table row to the corresponding pie sector. You might include a colour-code column in the table if there is space.
* Is there a reason that the project logos that you currently use can't be replaced by the project badges, where available?
* The table between Chart 1a and Chart 1b uses a font size that is very small, and with its grey colour I find it difficult to read. There is no room for new projects. You could start another row of the 7 table fields, but perhaps you could put the current 7 rows (logo, Run Time Yrs, etc) across the top, and have a row for each project. That way, you could just add another row when a new project arrives.
* Again in the table, is there a difference between Project Estim = 100% and "Complt"?
* I notice that the last day plotted in the graphs is often some days in the past. This suggests that you have to update the data manually, which is a lot of work. Thanks!

Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

Thanks for your suggestions Rickjb. Put them on the list of considerations come time to redesign.

Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

Hi Sekerob,

Some things you might consider for *house cleaning*
- I think the font on DDDT chart X legend is 1 point smaller then the rest
- Most of the project charts start at JAN.10.09
-- NRFW X timeline starts on JAN.7-09
-- ACH X timeline starts on AUG.21-08
-I like the progress you have made in matching colors on the data elements, the corresponding x axis lables, and legends.
-I think if you use the same font size for both the left and right Y axis (I like the left better) you might gain a tiny bit of space on the right so the legend text does not touch the scale numbers (see CEP).
- The record / milestone footers on ACF and BETA looks like you didn't crop the Excel grey background the same as the others because they are grey and the others are white.
-For the first two charts, have you considered changing the legend orientation so the statistics headers go left to right and the project names go top to bottm? It appears you are already doing *things* to the alignment of the numbers themselves to get them to fit and while you do have space to cram 2 more in with your current font and spacing it may be easier if you switch it around in the long run.
-There are a total of 24 charts the note says "will load 23 images" while technically accurate (if we are only counting the chart images) just feels wrong, is anyone going to care if it loads "23" or "24", how many are actually going to count them, heck I don't even reference the chart number in my "suggestions" because I know you know which ones I am talking about ... I am just rambling on because "23 images" but 24 charts just *feels* odd.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Re: Sekerob's awesome charts

also perhaps putting up a points / hour each project rewards by each project?

For those that are motivated by points; then those users know which projects to select in via a most points per hour ratio.

By the way, thanks for the charts.
