XP(32bit) dual boot with Windows 7 (64bit)

I find that any time I go into XP and Boinc runs there for a while, the next time I go into Win'7, I will find Boinc there screwed up, and I have to reinstall it.

Any clue as to how to avoid this. I am pretty much moving exclusively to Win'7 to avoid the hassle.

You can't share one BOINC installation between two operating systems.

If you have separate installations, then you must make sure each operating system identifies the computer by a different host name (otherwise the servers may have trouble distinguishing them).

If neither of these suggestions fit your case, then you will have to be more specific.

Well, the problem has gone away -- at least THAT problem :)

I had such grief with a rootkit virus (twdll.dll) in XP that I repartitioned and reformatted the drive and installed ONLY W'7:64bit. It seems stable enough and everything but Photoshop and PowerDVD seem to work in it -- EXCEPT now Boinc just won't work at all now :(

I have re-downloaded and re-installed several times and I can't get it going. Boinc says, "Communicating with project. Please wait..."
Then W'7 says, "W C G for windows has stopped working"

Could this be connected to the server confusion about who I am?

Re: XP(32bit) dual boot with Windows 7 (64bit)

Hello BobRevay,
Windows 7 is new but it is similar to Vista.
Here is a Start Here post about installing on Vista: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856
Here is the WCG Wiki on Vista: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Installation_walkthrough_(Vista)

Does any of this help you with Windows 7?

Lawrence

Egads! You're right! Now I remember; I need to install it with Vista compatibility -- that's how I got it to work before.

My memory is SO bad -- but then I am 73 years old. Thanks so much for quick replies and dead-on suggestions.

Re: XP(32bit) dual boot with Windows 7 (64bit)

crying There's more!

OK, I got WCG running invoking Vista compatibility -- seemed slower than before, but it ran.

A few other app installations and reboots, and I noticed it was no longer running.

Delete alles und reinstall (Vista compat) and now I find that invoking BOINC locks up the manager:

<alt><ctl><del> says
WCG-BOINC not reponding
WCG-BOINC-localhost not responding

So I launch netstat -a and find

127.0.0.1:31416 Wolfdale:0 listening
127.0.0.1:31416 www:49697 established
127.0.0.1:49697 www:31416 established

and lots more that I doubt are relevant.

So, Lawrence, any idea what is happening (I suspect overzealous security measures are involved).

Bob

Re: XP(32bit) dual boot with Windows 7 (64bit)

Hi, BobRevay.

We have a problem here. We don't support Windows 7. Even the Berkeley BOINC developers don't support Windows 7. We can try to help, but we can't make any promises.

A few questions to get started:

1. What do you mean by "invoking BOINC"?

2. Are you using 6.2.28?

3. Did you choose the "Install as a service and run under a restricted account" option?

Thank you.

4. Do you get this error? http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Unable_to_connect_to_the_core_client

5. Please will you copy the contents of stderrdae.txt and paste it here. You will find it in your data directory: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Data_directory

Re: XP(32bit) dual boot with Windows 7 (64bit)

Thanks for your willingness to look at this problem, 'O Didactylos. I will understand if you want me to just go away until Windows 7 is released.

I ran WCG under XP originally. I had MAJOR grief with a rootkit virus under XP and that is reflected in the thrashing about you will see in
stderrdae.txt as I reformatted my boot drive and re-installed XP repeatedly.

When I went to dual boot with W'7 I had some problems switching between OS that prompted this thread.

I started over with solely W'7 and -- installing with Vista compatibility -- I ran WCG for a while just fine. Then after installing several more apps, I found WCG (which was launching at startup) was frozen with the status line message, "connecting to localhost".

Using the task manager, I had to "End process tree" to kill BOINC.exe & BOINCmgr.exe. I remember seeing and killing BOINCtray.exe too sometimes.

Now your questions:
1) I launch BOINC using the shortcut, ""C:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC\boincmgr.exe"" on the start menu. As a consequence I find in task manager, boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe processes running with 00 cpu utilization.

On the applications tab, I see
WCG-boinc manager-(localhost) "Not Responding"

2) The BOINC version is 6.2.28.0

3) I did NOT "install as a service..."

4) I do NOT get the error message you reference.

5) I tried to copy into here the stderrdae.txt file, but I got an error when I tried to post the message. I suspect it is too big (691 KB). If it is all important, can I email, ftp, or Skype it to you?

Re: XP(32bit) dual boot with Windows 7 (64bit)

Okay. That's stdoutdae.tx, not stderrdae.txt. Not to worry, though, I'm not really interested in what it says given your other information.

For Vista, we always recommend the service install option. I think this advice will also apply to Windows 7.

Here's what I want you to try:

1. Uninstall BOINC.
2. Delete everything in your data directory: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Data_directory
3. Reinstall, choosing the service option: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Installation_walkthrough_(Vista)

Please let me know how you get on.
