confused Pre-set device profiles

In Device Manager>Device Profiles we can choose between 4 pre-set device settings: "Standard settings", "Minimum impact", "Maximum output" and "Power saving".

But there's no information about what are those settings. There's a subjective description, but no numerical description about processor, disk, memory and network usage. Where can I get this information?

If there's no where to find it, is it there someone who can tell me?

I think this is an important information that couldn't be missed.

I.E. I may want to set my custom profile, but maybe I wouldn't need to if already there's a pre-set one exactly the way I'd like to set my profile. It is just a example of situation in what the info is needed. But anyway, I just believe that we need information more specific than "it will do the maximum amount of research possible on my computer".

Re: Pre-set device profiles

Hi Marcio,

When the radio button sits on the pre-set profile for any of the 4 selected it means no key control features were modified, but maybe the project selections. If you then hit the Custom button you can see the detail of all the options pre-selected.

There's an FAQ in the Start Here forum that compares the different base profile settings btw at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17033

cheers

Re: Pre-set device profiles

Thanks, Sekerob and Didactylos!

The "custom profile" workaround doesn't work for me (it always show the last custom profile I made myself). And I didn't find that info in forum (I swear I searched). blushing

It could be at help pages or even at the Devices Profiles page (maybe as non-editable options where custom profile options stands). It would be more "findable". It's only a suggestion (if you don't want to hide this option on purpose).

The "custom profile" option doesn't work especially well for me either. When I tried to use it to switch from the standard profile to a custom profile, the CPU use percentage wouldn't go above 99%. I finally got it to go to 100% by selecting the maximum performance option, saving it, then selecting the "custom profile" option again.

However, now that I need to set it to less than 100% for test purposes, even entering a smaller percentage and then saving it shows no sign of actually decreasing the percentage of time my CPU is active.

I've tried this with the default profile, the home profile, and even created a new work profile (even though I'm retired). I've also tried this for the web settings of all the active BOINC projects I participate in; still no decrease of actual time used, even though it is able to remember that I want a lower CPU usage.

How can I tell it to decrease the percentage in a way that will actually work? I'd like to do it in a computer-specific way, in case the computer I plan to order soon needs different settings.

I'm using BOINC 6.2.28 under 32-bit Vista SP1.

Re: Pre-set device profiles

The CPU time field has I think a 4 character limit. Thus, 99.9 % fits but 100.0 % does not.

Did the change save? They only take effect when the client communicates with the servers after the change. You can force that by selecting WCG in the BOINC Manager's project tab, and hit the update button.

Use the . as decimal. (in case someone is used to enter the comma)

The change saved, and I used the Update function. I even saw the web-site change on some of the other BOINC projects I participate in, just no sign that the CPU use actually decreased.

Of course you have to tell BOINC to run based on preferences in the activity menu.

You can confirm the settings copied to your client by opening the global_prefs.xml file and look in the section that has the name of the device profile associated with the device.

Added: Of course the start up message log of BOINC shows which profile is in use and when last updated e.g.
2/7/2009 11:28:44 PM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 05-Feb-2009 23:52:58)
2/7/2009 11:28:44 PM||Host location: school
2/7/2009 11:28:44 PM||General prefs: using separate prefs for school
