rose anyone else using new BOINC 6.6.3?

Was trying to find version 6.4.5 again, which I had dumped after having some problems with it, when I ran across the newly released version 6.6.3. Bleeding edge vs. leading edge...hmmm. Downloaded and running it only the last day, but the new tasks format makes it feel like something is really happening--the % completion is actually a little bar chart showing progress. Who said a picture is worth a thousand words. Feels like it is optimized for 64-bit machines. (Running on VISTA 64-bit, Q9350 cpu. )

Originally it downloaded only one WU, but downloaded 3 more after I remembered to have it read config and preference files.

Thanks, guys, for giving us this new improved sporty model. I knew someday it was going to be worthwhile having a 64-bit machine. (venting my frustration at the software that DOESN'T run on 64-bit machines, having migrated from 32-bits).

Don't use it!

Seriously, it has major problems. Alpha releases are only for dedicated alpha testers.

It isn't optimised for 64 bit machines, and the bar charts are not new. Sorry to destroy your illusions!

Re: anyone else using new BOINC 6.6.3?

6.6.x is strictly the beta development sequence? Think there was only 1 6.5.0 alpha. The amount of error reports is shocking on work fetching and whatnot, so it's beyond me how this renewed flaunting of a proper development cycle has happened. Have they at Berkeley still not figured out that BOINC is now a large rolled out grid production vehicle that deserves a new approach as how to release versions to the public?

Here's another warning after watching an interview Mark Russinovich of MS. Windows 7 possibly already has abilities to concentrate processes on 1 core to allow the other cores to go in deep sleep. Don't know, but today I discovered twice that all 4 WCG sciences were running off 1 core... and it's with 6.2.28! This was after yesterday I was pushed the .Net 3.5 SP1 of 280mb and the documentation stating it's fit to work together with W2008 and W7! What the heck. No I'm not making this up, I could not make this up. I'm upset.

Re: anyone else using new BOINC 6.6.3?

I'm using 6.6.0 only because it's the best release I've found for running GPUGrid at the moment. I would NOT recommend using it unless you want to be a tester. It has many irritating bugs. Some of them are project specific. sad

I agree with Sek ... Berkeley is putting out too many releases without regard to proper testing across the DC projects. It's almost like they are trying to meet a quota. laughing

For what it's worth ... coffee

crying What! Not optimized for 64-bit??? And bar charts are not new??? Guess they must have been in V. 6.4.5, which I couldn't get to log on. Had I known, I might have tried harder. Oh well.

Meanwhile, I checked the results status to see if my machine was having any problems with 6.6.3 and found 6 ABENDs of 30 WUs , and all of them with prefix "mf". Also found that a 32-bit Q6600 machine was getting errors on "mf's". How's that for a clue...it doesn't work on 64-bit, it doesn't work on 32-bit. Get rid of it! (and I did). I don't recall having any problems with that project before the migration except for long run times...just not very good at folding.

Anyway, since 6.4.5 didn't take on this machine and since I've taken care of the problem with 6.6.3 on this end, will just run it until the sheriff shows up with the injunction. If there is no problem on your end, I don't mind dealing with a work in progress, since it's already loaded and apparently working just fine.

Re: anyone else using new BOINC 6.6.3?

There are all sorts of (good and bad) reasons to run something other than the supported version. The only point that is important is that WCG only supports certain versions, so if you choose to run something else, you need to understand that you are on your own for support.
