Running boinc without the manager.

Is there a way to run the wcg on boinc without the boincmgr.exe running? its an eyesore in my system tray and I have to make it go hide everytime I restart windows. On this particular machine I dont have a service called boinc in windows management.

I was wondering If it would be possible to do this because on my linux machines I only have to ./boinc to run it.. No need to ./boincmgr

I'm not sure for windows, but I guess you can close boincmgr without closing applications (tasks). Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Linux versions have a command line version and can be run as a daemon, so it's possible.

Re: Running boinc without the manager.

In windows when I close the boincmgr window It gets stuck after it completes the workunits it has running in memory. You cant just run boinc.exe and get it to work sadly.

Re: Running boinc without the manager.

Who says?

Get BOINC 6.2.28 from the WCG download link on My Grid.

First, uninstall BOINC and reinstall taking the Service/Protect option (your project files are save doing this). Also tick the "Allow all users".

Second. Remove the (Auto) Startup folder shortcuts, so BOINCmgr wont start, but the service will.

Third, start BOINCmgr whenever you need to do housekeeping and exit it when done, making sure NOT to tick the "stop running the science applications..."

There is a little application running called boinctray.exe. Let it be. It has contrary to it's misleading name nothing to do with the tray icon.

Re: Running boinc without the manager.

The best way to do this is to install as a service. Follow the instructions here: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Installation_walkthrough_(Vista)

The key step is selecting "Install as a service and run under a restricted account".

Once you have done this, you can run BOINC Manager, not run BOINC Manager - whatever you want. BOINC will continue to run undisturbed, and when you start BOINC Manager, it will show you all the old log messages from while it was quietly working away.
