Proxy server support bug?

This may be in the wrong forum, since I think this is a Boinc bug, but . . .

My work network is behind a firewall, and uses a proxy (via an automatic configuration script) to access the outside world.

If the Boinc client opens the first IE (using IE 6) window, it fails with a message that the web-site is not found. If there are any IE windows open, things connect fine.

I saw this happen once during beta testing. But, after a reboot, I was unable to reproduce the problem.

Re: Proxy server support bug?

It's consistent for me, but not a big deal since there is an obvious work-around (start up IE before accessing any of the Web buttons in the client).

FYI - Boinc is version 6.2.19, IE is 6.0.2900.2180, and the machine in question is XP with SP 2.

Re: Proxy server support bug?

Consider updating to our official version, 6.2.28. It may not help, but it should be better than 6.2.19.

The upgrade didn't help. I haven't rebooted - if I remember, I'll test again and post results the next time the machine is restarted.

Re: Proxy server support bug?

If you entered the proxy information correctly ("Advanced" => "Options" -> "Http proxy") then maybey you are experiencing the same problem as I do: the proxy has cached the old (pre-move) ip address.

I'm not able to upload/download anything since the move.

(It would probably work if there was a way to connect to WCG by ip address in stead of connecting via a www-address (which now resolves incorrectly))

Hope this helps...

Re: Proxy server support bug?

Hi, E. Frijters.

This particular bug has nothing to do with BOINC's proxy settings. The URL is passed directly to the browser. IE is resolving the address correctly, so clearly there is no DNS problem.

The problem is in the code used to launch the default browser.
I did have another thought, though. The problem may be with the default browser settings. Using "Program Access and Defaults" to reset the default may (or may not) help. Usually problems with this are limited to Vista (I had this problem on Vista) but folacin reports XPSP2.

folacin, it may be a good idea to install SP3.

The code used to launch the browser is an example of copy and paste coding - a classic "how not to do it" example. However, I don't think BOINC is to blame - I suspect the problem lies in the library code (wxWidgets).

SP3 is a scary beast. There are still know and reported bugs in it, primarily in the USB drivers, a big problem if you are using USB HDD.

It's not THAT scary. I haven't had any trouble with SP3 so far. And I just rolled it out to 900 machines in November. I'm about to roll it out to the remaining 4500+ machines where I work starting in a week.

Are you putting World Community Grid on those machines? If you are interested we have a partner program that could get your company a little PR for running the software:
