Targets for length/runtimes of WUs

Recently, WCG has altered the targeted sizes of WUs for the NRW, FAAH and DDDT (welcome back!!) projects. Change in RICE work unit runtime, Change in Fight AIDS @ Home work unit runtime, (DDDT) Re: Update on Re-start. (- uplinger)
The targeted sizes were expressed as run-times. This makes sense for NRW, where the run-time is fixed, but for the other projects, the run-times depend on the speeds of each of our computers.
For projects other than NRW, would it not make more sense to express the targeted WU sizes as Average Credits Awarded, with run-time on the fleet average device (or whatever) given as a secondary parameter?
Or does WCG think that the issue of having WCG "points" displayed in some parts of the website and BOINC "credits" in other parts is likely to generate even more confusion among members when they try to work out their predicted WU runtimes?

Re: Targets for length/runtimes of WUs

The client doesn't show granted credits (or even claimed credits) so that metric would not help inform the average member.

Given a change from 10 hours to 6 hours, nearly all members should be able to see a drop to 60% of their previous times. Most members don't track how much credit they receive per task, but any member who checks their progress frequently will have a good idea of how long tasks are taking.

If you prefer to work with credits, the conversion should be simple enough. 60%.

Re: Targets for length/runtimes of WUs

Credits are varying much from one project to another and from one machine to another. With device history playing a role in the validation and crediting algorithms it is even varying over time for a given device and a given project.

I think that we should simply ask the admins to never forget to express these announcements in the form "target duration will be changed from xx hours to yy hours". This way everybody can translate it to any particular situation.

Cheers. Jean.
