I understand it must be a massive undertaking, fraught with complexities and potential snafus, to switch servers and alter the network.
However, I cannot understate how frustrating it is to see the massive amount of wasted electricity caused by the recent changes. I'm just getting to the first my machines, and seeing machines, that through no fault of mine, now have wrecked installs, that previously ran trouble-free. Machines that haven't produced in three or more days due to "the change-over". Machines that have "reached daily quota of 4 results" that had zero problems before. I'm not sure WCG's administration understands how much that can alienate their userbase. Maybe they just don't care. Perhaps if I ran just one or two rigs it wouldn't bother me, but I run a lot more than that. Out of my home. Paying the power bill out of my pocket. I've chosen to do so as I like the project and support its' general goals. But when this kind of stuff happens it makes one reconsider my loyalty or dedication to the project. I have no idea what happened, exactly. I just feel like the trust that we ( or I ) have in the project has been violated. Sure, this disaster of a switchover, wasn't planned to have gone so poorly, but from my perspective it definitely has. It just burns me and leaves me ticked off. Thanks for letting me vent. I now return you to your regularly scheduled program. |

Unforeseen problems were expected.
But from the sound of things, you had a different problem. Can you tell us more about it? Did you abort a whole load of work? You talk about "wrecked installs". Obviously you are exaggerating, but that doesn't help us know what is actually wrong. Help us help you. |

Thanks for responding.
Well, here is my rigs output for the last 14 days. 1/11/09 0:010:09:00:12 39,557 56 1/10/09 0:021:20:58:52 77,439 111 1/9/09 0:018:21:53:17 70,693 98 1/8/09 0:018:08:12:07 57,014 81 1/7/09 0:061:16:23:15 210,100 292 1/6/09 0:054:15:36:44 189,633 267 1/5/09 0:075:09:52:59 267,337 372 1/4/09 0:063:10:46:06 226,743 324 1/3/09 0:074:15:03:21 266,451 377 1/2/09 0:060:05:55:14 217,384 313 1/1/09 0:066:07:22:16 240,438 354 12/31/08 0:065:06:36:51 231,566 333 12/30/08 0:069:05:48:07 251,154 355 12/29/08 0:066:14:07:45 241,181 348 That one rig that I looked at, that is getting the "daily quota of 4 results" message, has not returned a result in 14 days. So, with that one, it is my bad. It is obvious that the problem with it is on my end. Been wanting to change that over to a 64-bit OS, anyway, so I will do a fresh install. ~~ The numbers don't lie, though; there is obviously something wrong going on with the rest of 'em in regards to WCG. I'll be systematically taking a look at them after posting this. |

Make sure all your machines are uploading properly. BOINC can't be relied on to pick up the DNS changes properly - you may need to restart to force the change.
Many computers weren't able to return results for a few days until the DNS changes propagated. Your pending validation queue is probably a bit longer than usual. And, of course, if you didn't adjust your work buffer to tide yourself over the period when you couldn't connect, then you may have run dry on a few machines. Ultimately, those people running huge home DC farms have to take the extra responsibility for making sure they run smoothly. It's a huge task, and impressively commendable. But you have problems and considerations that the techs simply don't factor into their decisions. |

Gotcha. Thanks.
Yeah, I used to check every rig, every day. Then it was a couple of times a week. Then even that fell off. So, right now, I've got a lot of checking to do. The second rig I checked had 78 results sent up after rebooting. |

That is the DNS update problem, all right. Reboot cures it.

the water of knowledge and assistance has helped the work units flow again. :)
----------------------------------------now, if only i could get these rigs under some "irrigation" they would be able to produce even more. alas, no water-cooled rigs here. that may change soon, though. my top machine, which is currently down for hardware changes, may get watercooling soon. 8 cores, at 3980 MHz, on air. under water that could conceivably be 8 cores at 4200 MHz.
