UPDATE: ![]() According to some of our projections, we need to beat IBM Corporation by 77 to 85k points EVERY SINGLE DAY for the remaining (very approximate) 6 months or so -- and if we do so, we will beat them overall, leaving us #2 after Slashdot, and placing Tribalwar.com ahead of not only the teams for nations, catch-all teams and internal divisions of IBM, but ahead of the output of Big Blue itself in its flagship grid computing proof-of-concept (WCG). Not at all insignificant. ![]() Btw -- I hardly think anyone can argue that our unorthodox rabble-rousing tactics have not been ends-means justified at this point. Have you read C.J. Cherryh's 'Heavy Time' and 'Hellburner' to learn the proper rab-speak? Good Crunching! Cheerfully, Lawrence |

jeune rab takes on corp-style Big Blue? Have you read C.J. Cherryh's 'Heavy Time' and 'Hellburner' to learn the proper rab-speak? Good Crunching! Cheerfully, Lawrence Would I be a proper rab if I had? Heh, actually -- I've read most of the foundation of SF, Asimov/Heinlein/Bradbury/Clarke/Dick/Norton (in fact, I own every book published for heinlein and bradbury, and several first editions of 'Andrew North') and I've tried to read other important books from that era (like the fantastic "A Canticle For Liebowitz"). But I'll admit that it's been a while since I read any new fiction; all of my reading time is taken up with programming books. I feel like an old man -- most of the SF I've read was published prior to 1975. Gibson is the newest SF writer I've dipped into. My Dad is a huge SF buff. I've seen those books on his shelves, just never given them a shot. Anyways . . . yes, this is indeed a popular movement. I think that a key point often overlooked in this kind of project is the power of controversy. I swear -- it's fine to have a Team America and a Team Canada, but you know what would guarantee a HIGHER turnout? Team Republican and Team Democrat. Holy shatsicles, the turnout you would see, oy vey . . . |

Except that would be limited by local politics. Better then to generalize into global concepts such as authoritarianism vs liberalism, religion vs reason, or progressive forces vs conservative.

Except that would be limited by local politics. Better then to generalize into global concepts such as authoritarianism vs liberalism, religion vs reason, or progressive forces vs conservative. That's a good idea in theory, but in practice it would mean that only liberals/progressives would join ANY of the teams, because one of the defining characteristics of conservatives is that they're xenophobic. American conservatives do not tend to get along with Canadian conservatives or British conservatives, and no way in hell would they be on a team together. In contrast, can you imagine how well the WCG would have done if it had had a Team Democrat/Team Republican DURING the election cycle? :D |

Well, you said it yourself.
----------------------------------------The conservative forces would just say "We don't support baby-killing!" or whatever, and turn their loss into a PR-win or something. No, we don't need that. And yes, my point was that everyone here is a progressive libertarian in some way. If you think UK and US conservatives are different from one another - you must have totally forgotten the differences between US "republicans" and "democrats" vs the rest of the world. Collectivism / authoritarianism vs individualism / liberalism just might work though. I wonder where IBM would line up. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 11, 2005 12:51:02 PM] |

In contrast, can you imagine how well the WCG would have done if it had had a Team Democrat/Team Republican DURING the election cycle? :D mr_luc -- I know you were not around at that time, but the World Community Grid did not go public until November 16, 2004, a full two weeks after election day. Had you taken the time to do some research, you would find the following three teams: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=MG5RSMBR9N1, http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=Z34154FFN1, and http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=DB54MQKDN1. Of these, the Digital Democrats appear to have really never been active. Neither of the two Republican teams has drawn that many members, although they have members still actively involved in the WCG. |

I was saying, hypothetically -- imagine the intense turnout if WCG had been able to take advantage of the months leading up to the election. Obviously, this would have required the WCG to exist at that time. |
