problems with the agent useing small amounts of cpu

Welcome

The agent on my computer only uses about 15% of my cpu
even when I do not have any programs running that use cpu
when I go to Windows Task Manager it shows
WCGrid_Rosetta.exe with a low priority and System Idle Process
84%
Commit Charge: 368M/1255M

I have a Pentium[R] 4 CPU 3.00 GHz
512 of RAM

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Editon
Service Pack 1

74.5 GB Hard Drive

HP Pavilion zx5000

can anybody answer this problem?

I am not sure what you are see as a problem here. The agent, UD.EXE running at 15 percent seems a bit high to me (perhaps you are running it with the graphic image of the current protien). WCGrid_Rosetta.exe is the actual process performing the calculations for the project. 84 percent is a bit lower than I would expect for it. My recommendation would be to run the agent without the graphic image. Then you should see the WCGrid_Rosetta.exe running at about 90 to 95 percent.

cool Re: problems with the agent useing small amounts of cpu

Here is a thread where one member had an underperforming Rosetta: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1414#6944

Re: problems with the agent useing small amounts of cpu

Please be aware that I am not computer knowledgeable. But your problem sounds familiar to me.

You appear to be saying that Rosetta performance fell from 84% cpu usage to 16% cpu usage. A friend who is also running WCG had the same kind of problem. His cpu usage didn't get near that low, but otherwise it sounds the same. It turned out to be a hot cpu problem.

What is your cpu temp? Do you have a temp monitor? If so, does your mobo automatically throttle back the cpu when it exceeds the recommended temp range?

One easy way to check (while being safe) is to shut your system down for 8 hours, or so. When you fire it up again, see if the cpu useage begins to slowly decline again. peace

Motherboard Monitor at http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ is a free program that monitors the temperature of many computers. It is a very useful program. I think that julied's hypothesis is very likely.
