Hello,
----------------------------------------I have two (2) identical devices, Intel E6750 C2D, that are using the same profile. One of the devices will only run a single WU at one time. The other works as it should, running two WU's, one each core. Up until sometime this past week both devices worked as I expected them to. Then something caused the one device to start processing a single WU. As I wrote above, both devices are using the same profile, which does not limit the number of processors, and as far as I can tell have no local configs that state otherwise. Device Desc - Both Devices: Windows XP-Pro SP3 E6750 C2D 2MB DRAM ~ 160GB free storage on system drive BOINC V 6.2.28 Thank you in advance to anyone that can provide insight into the reason and what I need to change/correct to resolve. and as far as I can tell have no local configs that state otherwise Bill, please make sure of that by clearing local preferences for this machine and if that does not clear the problem please post the beginning of your message log down to the (re)start of the first task. For clearing local preferences, from the Advanced view of BoincMgr, select Advanced->Preferences, then click the Clear button in the top-right corner of the Preferences window. Cheers. Jean. |

If you find that tweaking the BOINC setup doesn't help, check Windows Control Panel --> System to ensure that you're not running in uniprocessor mode.

Jean, clearing the local preferences did the trick, thank you. Now I'm going to see if I can figure out how they were changed.
----------------------------------------eviltoad, at the risk of looking like a complete novice how does one place XP in uniprocessor mode? The only things I find that appear to be close are Hardware and advanced settings and neither have any setting that relate to processor mode? Thank you both for the advice! Bill P

You sometimes get a multi-core PC running in uniprocessor mode after a hardware upgrade, for example, when you change your CPU on Windows 2000 or XP machine from a P4 to a C2D or C2Q. (Further reading on this subject suggests to me that it may also happen for other reasons.)
----------------------------------------Without knowing the exact nature of your current config I thought it would be useful to explore this possibility. To see how Windows is using your CPU you can do this: Go to Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager --> Computer If you see something like ACPI Multiprocessor PC you're fine. If you see Uniprocessor or similar you'd have to replace the driver. I seem to remember posting slightly more detailed instructions in the past but a search is not bringing it up right now. Eviltoad, Thanks for the response. I verified ACPI Multiprocessor and both cores show enabled and operating.
----------------------------------------Per my earlier post, clearing the local preferences solved the problem, although I have no idea how they got set. The only thing I can find in the logs is that on 01/02 BOINC ran benchmarks and then reported only one processor?? Following that the "using local preferences override" message started appearing. All very strange!
