Remote Hosts

Is anyone connecting to remote clients with version 6.2.28?
I have not had any luck getting this to work and the only docs I have found are for earlier versions and it seems some things have changed since then.

Re: Remote Hosts

I am not using it normally, so I had not tried it yet since I upgraded to 6.2.28, but I have just done it for you.

The procedure is the same as before except that the password of the remote machine (the one defined in gui_rpc_auth.cfg, not in client_auth.xml) is apparently not saved correctly. Therefore you have to enter it again each time, although the field looks as if it is prefilled.

For coming back to your localhost machine the prefilled password is OK.

I will report this anomaly to the techs, but they surely have more urgent things to do until the datacenter move is complete.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Remote Hosts

I think this is where I got lost.
If the password is not saved and you can type in anything you want when you connect what password are you putting in the file?

Re: Remote Hosts

I'm not sure I follow you, jasm850.

There should be a password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg already. You can change it if you wish, but the auto-generated password is fine.

To connect to a remote host, you also need to create a remote_hosts.cfg file on the remote machine. Follow these instructions: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Controlling_BOINC_remotely

Re: Remote Hosts

Thanks for the link. It does seem straight forward ... crying
That file gui_rpc_auth.cfg did not already exist.

I have both PCs running as services
On the Remote PC I create gui_rpc_auth.cfg put in the one line password
I create remote_hosts.cfg I put 3 lines. the PC name, PC name fully qualified, the IP of the PC. All for the maching I will be connecting from.
I remove the hidden .txt extention that windows put on the file name!
These files are at C:\Program Files\BOINC
I restart the BOINC service on the Remote Machine

On the local machine I select Advanced -> Select Computer and put in the Remote PC name and password that was stored in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file

It forever trys to connect to the remote client.

The only thing that is out of sorts is that in this version the password file should have been present. (based on everything that I have read)

Re: Remote Hosts

The files are in the wrong place.

BOINC 6 moved the data directory. By default, you will find it at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC (on XP, anyway).

applause Re: Remote Hosts

That is much better thank you! biggrin
To anyone else following this thread for some help know that that directory is hidden by default and don't forget to restart the service after making changes.

The default password did not work for me and I had to supply one of my own.

It will be nice not having to remote into all my remote machines for a change.

Re: Remote Hosts

I've updated the Wiki page to mention this change in BOINC directory location:

Re: Remote Hosts

BOINC directory and BOINC Data directory, explicitly under BOINC 6 are different locations ! At the bottom of that wiki is already a section to explain locations with versions smile
