Ok, i have searched smp and multicore for the answer, and the most direct answer to my question is from 2005 or 2006, so i'm asking again.
----------------------------------------I have a quad core, just downloaded agent about 2 or 3 days ago, running vista (but the 32 bit version i think), wondering if running 1,2,3 or 4 cores is "best". as i said the answer in 05 or 06 was to run 2. Something to do with hyperthreading... is that still correct? Second, one of the threads say that running anything less than 100 percent would set it or appear to set it to 50%...so i have laptops running this too and old computers, i like about 70 to 80 percent for heat reasons, am i limiting my processing to 50% by doing this? (still better than burning up a laptop have done that before, too much video games :) ![]() [Edit 3 times, last edit by Jack007 at Feb 5, 2009 6:26:57 PM] |

If you have a quad core, use all 4 cores by all means.
I think all the previous threads you found were discussing Hyper Threading. If you don't have a CPU with Hyper Threading, you can ignore that discussion entirely (including the part about 50% CPU use, which I think you may have misread). |

Ok i'll set to 4, I have no idea if there is hyper threading on this machine, in fact now that I think about it, haven't seen much talk about that for some time, it's all dual/core2/quad etc.

Normally BOINC should be able to figure out how many cores you have btw. A Quad core clearly has 4 cores though.
If you are worried about the temperature of your cpu you can indeed limit the processing by setting the CPU time that BOINC is allowed to use to something below 100%. Unless you have a laptop this should not be needed though normally. |

Interestingly, i set to 4, but 90 %, and there is a little disclaimer about certain versions setting it to the lower of the two values...(thought they were different values) and my machine is only running 3 cores. So if i set it to 70percent would it only run 2 cores, cuz that's less than 75%?

There is a different setting for the amount of processor time to use. Leave the percentage of CPUs to use at 100%, and adjust the CPU time setting.
Confused? You're in good company. |

If you are running Windows will appear information about your machine and Operating System to update you. With the kind of processor that are you using you can verify in the manufacturer web site, if there is a hyper threading on this processor. If you are a lucky guy with the new Corei7 family processor from Intel be aware that it automatically set use of hyper threading as default over windows Vista, so in this case your machine with quad core will process eight threads simultaneously (i don't know if is your situtation...). ![]()

OK, thank you 2 for your replies, odd thing is under my computer it says core2 quad core, then only lists 2.54 ghz twice... anyway the suggestion of setting the TIME lower than 100% and the CORES at 100% worked as advertised! Thank you all who read this post, and replied. I am now running 4 work units simultaneously. Next time, I'll drink coffee before setting any settings. THANK YOU AGAIN!
