It's funny because I installed BOINC and joined WCG specifically for the Clean Energy Project, but now I have to put up with helping lots of other causes because (according to server messages) "The Clean Energy Project is not available for your type of computer."
I have an intel mac. It can't possibly be THAT different architecturally, for a faceless process. Can we get a version for the Apple owners, please? ;) You're missing out on an 8 core 3.2ghz Mac Pro beast here. |

The Windows version was launched first. It is being beta tested for Linux and Mac now and will be along "soon", depending on results.
----------------------------------------IBM has a small crew until January 5, and then there will be a migration to new servers, which could introduce other delays. Please put up with the other causes in the meantime, and you can even sign up for beta testing yourself in addition (a setting in my grid/beta profiles). https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewBetaProfiles.do There are no guarantees that you will get a beta. There aren't very many workunits out there at a time.

I added two linux virtual machines to a windows server to process more of the CEP tasks and received these same messages. Oh well. It did make me start wondering about how these tasks are processed and created. Is there a lot of work to create these tasks for different hardware platforms, etc.?

Hello awr_reb,
Is there a lot of work to create these tasks for different hardware platforms, etc.? More than we would like. BOINC is normally intended for a single project so most of the work goes into improving the user side. Also, we started out running UD and added BOINC onto our server, so we still have some implementation to do on our servers. Which is why the BOINC Account Manager is not fully implemented. Once we have completed switching to the new server farm in Toronto, Ontario, we will have up-to-date database versions of our software and can complete the switchover to BOINC - - while adding new projects, debugging CEP, etc. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, especially the WCG staff!Lawrence |

I think the dev team are well aware that there will be enormous interest from all quarters for this work. I'm waiting with baited breath as well.

You aren't alone. The CEP was a compelling reason for me to restart use of BOINC software after folding over 500,000 points for Folding@Home and looking for a more productive challenge. I've got about 10 collective PPC and Intel cores sitting here myself waiting for OSX CEP WUs. I've always had the beta box checked, but I've never gotten a single beta WU myself, not for any project.
I too find it strange that Intel Macs should have to wait being that code execution should not be any different than that of the PC BOINC client unless there is some odd reason why the code needs to execute operating system calls. I would have thought direct interfacing to the OS for say read/write to disk etc would be handled by the client, not the project code to keep things more portable and universal. I could understand a wait for PPC client WUs... that's a completely different architecture. |

Who is in charge of porting this, if it really needs to be, for the Mac?
I don't figure they will necessarily be checking the forums. I am glad to help with the other projects, but I too have started this because of the Clean Energy Project. I didn't see anything leading me in the right direction on the CEP site... anyone care to do some research? ![]() |

Also, there was an official announcement that they will be beta-testing units for these platforms. It should be here soon, don't give up yet! |
