who owns the technology if some solution is found out?

Hi all,
What would happen if one of the "crunching/folding projects" actually discovers a cure for some disease or new energy tech...?

Who would "owns" the tech?

Will it be patented by a single corp/entity even though contributions come from around the world?

Then do people need to pay for it to use it?

I looked at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_community_grid#Potential_problems

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=21501

as well as

http://www.hyper.net/dc-howto.html

From the last it seems to be that the partners would actually own the results?

Please give a link/lemme know if I missed something somewhere.

Why would it be under "potential problems"? Shirish, you have been around a long time. I thought you understood that our results are public domain. This means nobody owns them.

The page you were looking for is right here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewAboutUs.do

As for other projects - who knows!

Re: who owns the technology if some solution is found out?

World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community.

From the home page.

Cheers

Right, I still wanted to get it confirmed, that info. should also be in the FAQ somewhere even if it means its being repeated.

It is in the FAQ, too.

The home page. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/
The "About Us" page. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewAboutUs.do
The FAQ. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=aboutwcg

This is one thing we're really proud of - we do our best to let everyone know.
