biggrin Re: WCG SPORTS Presents: Singapore Street Circuit 2008 Team Challenge Series (NEWS EXTRA: Rules Update!)

[station announcer]
A special report from WCG SPORTS News.

[McKay]
As mentioned in this thread, today would be the cutoff for new teams to enter the series and qualify to win. Well, this has changed! And to tell us about this and more, we have WCG SPORTS Chief Stats Coordinator, “The Guy with the great graphs”, Geopsychic. Geo?

[Geo]
Thanks Jim,

As you can imagine, the central problem with any racing system is to try to make a fair system where anyone has a chance to win. In the WCG system large teams have the advantage in point, result and run time races. Smaller teams have an advantage in the percent increase races. The challenge series is an attempt to equalize things.

The standings that result from the linked races are based on the teams order of finishing in each race. The team with the highest score gets 1 point, the team with the lowest score gets 0. All other teams get a proportional fraction. The standings are the sum from each race with one exception. If a team does not enter a race, it looses 10% of it's standings points as of the previous race. This may seem a bit odd. However the objective is to encourage all teams to enter all of the races. Without the penalty there is no real incentive for a team to join a race where it doesn't have an advantage.

This also allows teams to enter later in the series. All of the races in the series are open and late entries are allowed. If a team doesn't enter the early races they put themselves at a disadvantage because they will be playing catch up.

[McKay]
So this means that a team can come and go as they please?

[Geo]
Yes, But is wouldn’t be wise. Even for the larger teams.

[McKay]
Why is this important?

[Geo]
Well, due to the fact that not all the teams involved can view this thread, plus the chaotic nature of the way teams join the challenges here in general; this would improve the race in 2 ways. The true intent of these or any races here is to include those willing to go the extra mile. To cut any team would go against this concept.

[McKay]
And the other?

[Geo]
I don’t like cutting teams.

[McKay]
Hehe. I see. Well I hope we will be hearing more from you in the coming days.

[Geo]
I’m sure you will.

[McKay]
We will be back with today’s stats shortly, so stay with us. There is much more in store as we head into the first turn.

We will be right back.

Singapore Street Circuit 2008 Team Challenge Series Standings

A long series. 235 teams in all.

As can be seen several teams did not enter all of the races. That is the only way any standings score can decrease. The effect is the teams' scores are decaying. The "half life" of the score is between 6 and 7 races.

Re: The graphs for Race 1 - 3

The first place team in each race gets 1 point. The last place team gets 0. Every team in between gets (score - minimum score)/(maximum score - minimum score). The standings points accumulate between races. See the discussion with Jim McKay above about losing points for not entering a race.
