So I have been following the comments on the extended WU and I understand that CEP got started with really little control over the crunch time for the various WU in the project.
I got a WU with a 7 day return and it's projecting about 62 hours of crunching. The machine is a Celeron 2.66 but it is running at 100% is on a UPS and hasn't been down at all. If the WU validates I have no problems with the long run time, but if it errors out then I am going to be way more than a tad bit upset. 62 HOURS is way outside the boundaries of even an unreasonable WU run time. If Xeon can do this WU in 20 hours, I really don't care; WCG sent this monster to MY computer. Hopefully you will soon be able to tell us that you have figured out how to get the CEP WU down to a 10-15 hour optimal size as well as drastically reduce the 'outliers'. |

I second that. I just had a CEP WU finish that took 51 hours.

Whilst I do appreciate the nervousness on the prospect of a job running 62 hours and failing, we, the multi-device crunchers, do have the opportunity and ability to opt in or out from a project and formulate 4 different profiles so each machine can be assigned the tasks that even an older device can be comfortably run with.
----------------------------------------My Quad is doing batch 30 and 32 tasks in 8 hours now, 1 at the time, so what's coming through in new work is not as bad for this is shorter than the 10 hours the last few faah did on this computer. Meantime, am calling on some patience. The teething issues will be resolved. cheers

Just nabbed 2 beta version 6.23 before seeing the announcement:
----------------------------------------Beta Testing version 6.23 of The Clean Energy Project for Windows We will be starting shortly a beta test of version 6.23 of The Clean Energy Project. Only Windows is being tested currently. We hope to improve the detection of invalid results with this version. Later in the process, the research team at Harvard has the ability to detect invalid results that have been returned, but to maximize the efficiency of the project, we want to identify any invalid results as early on as possible. We hope to have beta candidates for Linux and Mac very soon. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=22718 The first runtime prediction is 21 hours on a C2D, so make a choice if this is too long for the liking.

I have a noob question. The long WU (45-50 hrs) and short deadline (7 days) combo is a concern. Not sure if it is going to be fixed soon. My BOINC agent runs 2 tasks simultaneous all the time ever since I installed it. Is there a way to configure it to run only one task at a time? That way at least I can meet the deadline. Can't find the setting anywhere in the software. Is it doing so because I have a Dual core processor? My other machine (single core pentium) just runs one task at a time. Thnx!

The deadlines were supposed to have changed to 12 days, but that's for new work generated. Work already in the feeders is locked in for 7... can't change that.
----------------------------------------Running one task at the time on a dual core simply needs the change in [local] preferences (advanced menu), processor usage tab, second last option "On Multi Processor...." to be set to 50% (BOINC v 6.2.28). The option below that can be used set e.g. 50% of the total processor time meaning at that rate, a job of 50 hours will take over 100 on the wallclock. By setting a My Grid > My Projects mix of CEP+RICE+HCC you have a good chance to run 2 jobs simultaneous, with 1 of them being CEP if available. That's proven so far to be more efficient on quad and duo. On both it cut the CEP run time by 25% or more (what I measured). There is presently though little RICE in the work pool.
