( Resolved) Server Status

Is there any reason why WCG cannot produce a page display such as -

http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/server_status.php

This would be extremely helpful in providing info and showing if the Validator is stuck etc?

If a small 'firm' like POEM can do this, surely someone like IBM can provide the same?

Re: Server Status

All legacy of the secretive UD design of better not tell what air's crunched, but it's a standard BOINC server feature, nothing special to your fav project... here's another: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_status.php and another: http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/server_status.php

If it ever comes here not heard of, but we're hopeful that the hosting move and the change over to a new database engine with lot's more features will allow the enabling.

Re: Server Status

I don't think it would help. In fact, I oppose such a display.

Most people tend to panic if it's not all green, while having absolutely no clue what any of it means. More knowledgeable users tend to get over-excited about status changes (look at any of the other BOINC projects for examples).

The final, and most important reason why not is because World Community Grid is so very, very much more complicated than these other projects. WCG have 6 active projects, and multiple physical servers, multiple schedulers and whole layers that aren't in the standard BOINC package.

I'm not opposed to some kind of status page - but it could look nothing like the BOINC ones.

Yes, we are all just thick. I tend to panic even when my christmas lights flash on and off.

This bit does make sense though.

Re: Server Status

A x-mas tree is a good analogy. With possibly 10 WU streams flowing concurrently mid next year and the multiple scheduled daily pausings of the validators, that page is going to look like a semaphore park in Naples... everyone ignores them anyway laughing

Re: Server Status

....but if you look at the recent threads on the validator problem, it took hours before it was realized that there was a problem.....a status page takes minutes!

Re: Server Status

Whilst we publicly were not putting out a note until 3PM my time via http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=22685 the server system has a bunch of automated "monitors" that send messages to the support folk, whoever was on standby, to report on one or the other system problem. The first tech to check in actually showed even before a normal Texan lifts the eyelids on Saturday/Sunday morning (I think he is from somewhere else ;-).
