system idle process while running Boinc on dual ?

How can "system idle process" take up to 50%, both cores use 25 %, while my comp is running WCG on both cores ? Have set processortime to 100% if no other program runs.
Also other programs run slower.
A restart fixes the problem, but not sure for how long.

Processor Usage

Do work while computer is in use? Yes
Do work only after computer is idle for: minutes
Do work while computer is running on batteries? No
Stop work after computer is idle for: minutes
If you are using version 6.2 of the software, then the number of processors used will be the lesser of the two fields below. If you are using a version before 6.2, then only the 'at most' field will be used.
On multiprocessors, at most use: 16 processors
On multiprocessors, use: 100 % of processors

Graphics

When displaying graphics, render at most 3 frames per second
When displaying graphics, use at most 1.0 % of cpu

Disk Usage

Use no more than: 10 Gigabytes of disk space
Leave at least: .5 Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: 50 % of total disk space
Write to disk at most every: 120 seconds

Memory Usage

Leave applications in memory while preempted? No
Use no more than: 50 % of memory while computer in use
Use no more than: 75 % of memory while computer idle
Use no more than: 50 % of virtual memory

Network Usage

Confirm before connecting to Internet? No
Disconnect when done? No
Maximum upload rate: 0 Kbytes/sec
Maximum download rate: 0 Kbytes/sec

Workunit Cache Settings

Connect to network about every .2 days
Cache 10 extra days of work

Cross Project Settings

Project Weight: 100
Switch between applications every: 60 minutes

Do I have to set Project weight to 500 for participating in 5 projects ??

Re: system idle process while running Boinc on dual ?

Not quite following what you say. You want it to use 50% of the available CPU time when computer in use? It's a requested feature but rather pointless. BOINC should not interfere with normal use as it runs at the absolute lowest priority. You can set BOINC to do nothing when using the pc (keyboard/mouse input).

Set it to 600. WCG is now 6 projects under 1 roof. But, if you only do WCG, 100 is 100% anyway. When you leave it to 100 and you choose 4 projects outside WCG it 100 becomes 20% of the total average daily time share, sort of.

Re: system idle process while running Boinc on dual ?

I want it to use as much processortime as possible if I'm not using the comp myself at that time.
But I don't understand system idle process gives a reading of 50%.
If I set the processortime to 100% I expect the cores run at 100% doing WCG.
But perhaps I understand "system idle process" wrong.
If it says 50% does that mean the cores are having a holiday for half the time ?

Only WCG.

Re: system idle process while running Boinc on dual ?

well:

Do work while computer is in use? Yes Okay
Do work only after computer is idle for: minutes Is disable by option Yes above.
Do work while computer is running on batteries? No Okay
Stop work after computer is idle for: minutes Leave to zero
If you are using version 6.2 of the software, then the number of processors used will be the lesser of the two fields below. If you are using a version before 6.2, then only the 'at most' field will be used.
On multiprocessors, at most use: 16 processors Okay
On multiprocessors, use: 100 % of processors Okay

In BOINC Manager (BM), go to Advanced menu, Local Preferences, Hit the Clear button and save. Possibly you have a much reported preference conflict v.v. the CPU use.

In BM, go to Activity menu and select "Run Always".

After, restart BOINC and post us your BM message log from the beginning if it does not start running 100% of the spare time.

50% idle suggests your computer is running only on 1 core. Are 2 or is 1 science project running when you look in the BM Tasks window?

Re: system idle process while running Boinc on dual ?

It starts at 100%, but, as I stated earlier, after some time both cores, not 1, only use 25 % each. If I check my WTM I only see 25 % for each core and 50 % doing "system idle process" ?????????
So what does that mean if not my cores having a holiday ?

At the moment both cores are chewing on hcc1 version 606 WU's at 25 % each and a "system idle process" at 50%.
What the heck is "system idle process" if it's not spare time my cores do not need.

Edited for inappropriate language...cih

Re: system idle process while running Boinc on dual ?

pass... know of no system that reduces idle priority processes to half a core (25%). What OS, what hardware, what energy saving features?

Re: system idle process while running Boinc on dual ?

MAB The Frisian, your percentages are very.... precise. My experience is that the actual percentages you see will vary a lot more than this.

Please will you open Task Manager.

* Set the update speed to "high"
* Go to the Performance tab

-- what do you see? Get a screenshot for us if you can.

Finally, what we always request: the BOINC message log. Just copy the messages and post them for us.

Thank you.

XP x64, 4050e, GA-MA78GM-S2H, 80Gb HD.
All running at default. Nothing exotic.
Is it possible "system idle process" are certain processes instead of doing nothing : http://www.backgroundtask.eu/Systeemtaken/Taakinfo.php?ID=3733. Gives no further expanation.
Avira doesn't show a virus.

Just downloaded SSS and snapped two jpg's. Just don't know how to import/place them in my message.

Took this from stdoutdae.

And at the moment WTM showes 50% for both cores each.
What is "system idle process" doing sometimes ?

And again it is 50%, As I at the moment do not know how to add a screenshot, I'll tell you what it shows.
The left screen shows full cpu usage while the right screen shows "hills and valleys", an up- and down going line. As if core 2 is picking its nose. ?????????
Page File usage is almost a straight line.

It seems to me it actually comes down to the fact : what is system idle process really and how to find out and check on your system ?

It seems that's all folkes. Good luck.
