When I use Boinc on some of my computers it lags up games. This is quickly countered by changing it onto snooze mode. Sadly this only lasts for an hour. Ive only noticed this effect on dual/quad core computers and does not affect any of my 1.6-3.2 GHz single core machines. Why is this so and how can I fix it? These dual/quad core machines have between 2 and 4 GB of ram and the slowest is a 4400+ amd 64-bit.

It is very possible that your games use a lot of memory.
Multicore computers use more memory because they are running multiple WCG tasks at once. There are two things you can do: Find out how much memory your games use, and change your BOINC preferences for suspending due to insufficient memory (while the computer is in use). This should make BOINC automatically suspend one or more tasks when you play a game, and hence solve your problem. |

Thanks for the info. sadly its having no effect on the computer. Ive changed it to use at most 1% of memory when in use and its still loaded into main memory while I use/play with the computer. The ive also installed one of my old games, Freelancer to check if low memory/cpu games are laggy. sure enough they are also slow. Im at a bit of a loss at the moment. any other ideas?
----------------------------------------Edit: Heres a turn in events. it seems that it has loaded 5 of the boinc processes into ram now. In boincmgr it says that they are all waiting for memory. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Nick-MMX at Nov 28, 2008 1:13:00 PM] |

BOINC 6.4 will have a configuration feature to make ALL sciences pause when programs of choice have loaded... sadly on a multicores ...
----------------------------------------![]() I prefer to set the Run according preferences in the Activity menu when doing something special and set the client to idle / resume with 30 minutes delay. Might actually conger up a new FAQ for the WoWwers and intense image renderers ;>)

Yes, that's what happens. While the tasks are suspended, BOINC leaves the tasks in memory, but other processes can use the memory, and the tasks are moved to virtual memory.
----------------------------------------This means that it may take Windows a few minutes to juggle memory and have the maximum available for your game. It is the OS moving memory around that slows you down, not BOINC itself. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 28, 2008 1:38:56 PM] |

That would fit the information I have gathered. I found that explorer.exe used 30% of the cpu during the lag spikes which usually corresponds to virtual memory being used. Thanks for the help.

My PC also is acting weird since this version. It hangs sometimes.
Can I download the older one? From where? |
