sad Over-caching WU's

as a default, the WCG settings set the boinc client to download 4 days of work. Its easy enough to change this but im thinking about other people. on my computers it downloads about 20-75 workunits (depending on which computer im using). With some people who turn their computer off they will not finish some of the workunits before the deadline of 2-3 weeks is up. I find that this is highly unacceptable in my mind. Some people wont bother to fix this and will waste workunits ( and maybe the cure to cancer!! ).

perhaps the wcg could fix this in the future.

Re: Over-caching WU's

I think this is an error. Thank you for pointing it out.

But relax: no work will be lost as a result of this. Work that doesn't make the deadline is simply sent to someone else (a reliable computer), with a short deadline. Also, BOINC takes into account the time computers are turned off when calculating how much work to request. So normally, no work will be wasted.

Re: Over-caching WU's

Hi Nick-MMX,

A bug I suppose too. Just played to see if i could replicate the appearance and deleted the "school" device profile. Had to log out and log in to get it back to show as one I could recreate. Doing so, after checking under Custom I find:

1. The School Profile assumed an association of the Preset as linked to the "Default" profile, in my case "Minimum Impact".
2. All the none Preset Defaults were set to those I'd set it under Default too.

This shows for me 2.5 days Connect and 0.0 Cache aka Additional Buffer (what i entered whenever WCG added the field to the device profiles).

Now, I don't know what the defaults presently are for a newly create member v.v. these none-preset fields. Last I did create a dummy test member it was 0.2 days Connect and 0.3 days Cache. All those default values were captured in an FAQ: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17033#177091. Missing here are the new Graphics settings being 3 frames and 5% CPU time. This acts on the BOINC Screensaver.

For All:

Talking about caching, there was a note in the back-room about the hosting site move and WCG going to be off line aka having an "Outage" for a period during the data replication from old to new location. Those that are hooked to projects outside WCG need not worry as their clients will simply fetch work from other projects and catch up based on the "debt" rules per Short Term Debt (STD) and Long Term Deb (LTD) i.e. after the outage if longer, the client(s) will do some extra work for WCG.

For those that are only doing WCG, a plan is developed to minimize this of course, but would suggest to keep ears to the ground and set a few days buffer. Who knows will WCG temporarily amend the default, but doubt it to be honest for a number of reasons to include it impacting multi project crunchers (2 Euro cent speculation).

When? The plan is I think somewhere in December but before X-mas. After that never a worry about Colorado blizzards ;>)
