Hi all, ok slightly annoyed here. No doubt my own fault or misunderstanding though. Have just installed 6.2.28 and from where I'm sitting it is no different from 5.10.45. I must still manually approve the program start up through UAC.
Firstly was this supposed to be resolved with 6.2.28 or does "several changes to improve the experience of running the software on Microsoft Vista" - knreed, mean other things? Secondly if has been resolved whats to go with my installation? What info would you all like to know about my system and what i have done? No hurry, I'm off for some sleep. Thankyou muchly!! |

Actually it is resolved and it is not, depending how you install. Choosing the Protected / Unprivileged User option allows the core client to run as a service (no different as choosing service install with 5.10.45). Then, BOINC Manager will start without asking for permission. See short discussion towards end of thread below:
----------------------------------------http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=22315#192004 Our Vista FAQ in Start Here has a paragraph with link to instructions how to get around UAC when not wanting to run BOINC as protected/service, I'd though recommend this as it BOINC will load before signing in on password secured systems. Yes, and we are as disappointed as you are and knreed is putting some more pressure on the developers to permanently fix this with version 6.4/ ciao

*sigh* This vista UAC stuff freaks me out!
I don't feel confident enough to go playing around, thats how reformats happen. I think i'll just wait till it is properly fixed up in an update to run automatically as it should on start up from a straight forward installation. But thankyou, seems you are all making progress on the issue, be it painfully slow, the program works fine manually and thats the main thing. |

Choosing the Protected / Unprivileged User option allows the core client to run as a service (no different as choosing service install with 5.10.45). For SouthernCrossBlue and for forum readers who would read such threads for deciding what they want to choose: The above is perfectly true from an operation viewpoint. But installation as a service with 6.2.28 is much better than with the 5.10 versions. With 5.10 you had to have a password for your userid or to provide another userid to install the service. I am not sure I describe it correctly but it was rather painful if you were the only user of your system and you did not use a password. With 6.2.28, installing as a service is as simple as the other options, namely you have nothing more to do, everything is handled by the installer and you can still run your userid without a password. And Boinc starts during the initial boot process (even if you do not logon immediately - for multi user systems), but still delaying actual crunching for 2 minutes to not slow down other startup activities. And for those who like it, there is no longer any restriction to the use of the screensaver in service mode. Cheers. Jean. |

I do not know about 6.2.28 as I do not use it...in answer to Jean -because it is WCG specific and I prefer to use the official BOINC as I do lots of other BOINC -
----------------------------------------...but install 6.2.19 from BOINC as an unprivilige which means it goes as a Service...then remove all mention of BOINCMGR from 'Start-up' and start it manually when you want to see the 'score'. It does not matter if you forget to do this as WCG will start to run ok after re-boot. This may also be the same for 6.2.28 but I have not tried it. The only "install" difference of the 6.2.28 WCG package is, that as per the beta test invitation http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=22385 the default is not "service/protected" BECAUSE of the continued UAC hazzle.
----------------------------------------Berkeley is going to make the WCG version their regular 6.2.28 sans skin and other specific WCG mods like the new version checking which in "our" version is WCG controlled. I.e. under the hood the versions functionality and code will be identical.
