Hello all,
is it possible to use boinc on computers without internet? for example to create a buffer of workunits, that multiple computers can process? If all the WU are processed the files are copied to a pc with internet to upload the units. I hope so, cause i've got several computers standing without internet. Hope to hear from you. Grtz, Spir |

What you can do is setting up a type of sneaker-net routine. Not officially supported, copying the multiple installs back with work and forth between the public facing client and the off-line crunchers. That method is error prone.
----------------------------------------There's been prior discussion on these fora how to do this. Maybe someone with practice can help or knows of a write up.

Hey,
I have a pc without internet as well. So I tried to get BOINCS to run on it. What I did is: I copied my BOINC install from my pc (with internet) to the one without internet, then let it run on the pc without internet. When it finished all work, I copied it back to the pc with internet and I uploaded the results / downloaded new work. But when I look in the Results status page, these results appear as 'detached' What does that mean ? Is the work on the 'no-internet' pc useless, or is it still valid work ? |

A few hints:
----------------------------------------1. Set in the Internet client (IC) the Activity Menu option to "Network Activity "Suspend" computations. 2. EXIT IC completely, INCLUDING the service/protected if installed as that! 3. Do the copying from IC to the Netless Client (NC) 4. On NC set Activity menu to Run or Run per preferences 5. When done, on NC do same as point 2. 6. Do 3 in reverse 7. Start IC and reverse point 1. 8. Work should upload and new should get fetched. 9. Go back to 1. Sort of the raw, but as said this is theory. I've never done it. Detach means that while your NC was crunching something on your IC caused to tell the servers that your IC was detached from WCG. The work got reassigned to another device of another member.

I also have much computers without internet. I have no time to do so many actions for every calculated result. I would be great to add a new feature to BOINC client which allows to download new tasks thru alternative media like USB flash drive and upload it back after calculation. I could make such transfers one or two times in the week.

I have ran boinc on computers without internet connections before, although I am not doing it now.
----------------------------------------The way I did it was to install boinc onto a USB memory stick, connect it to wcg and download a set number of workunits then plug the usb into another computer (the one without the internet connection) and let it do the computation. When the workunits are complete, return the USB memory stick to the original computer, upload the results and download a new set of workunits. I had this running with several USB memory sticks in several computers, but I guess the only limit is the number of USB sticks you have. The only problem I encountered was if you let a workunit run on more than 1 computer it would come back as an error. So make sure all workunits are complete before you transfer the USB memory sticks. This is my first post so I hope it was helpful. Steve. ![]() |
