Hello
I have installed about 25 projects, but only see about 1,5-10 of them in the task window. Sometimes only 1. How do I know the others are still ok? /Bengt Seoul Korea copy of message window 18.11.2008 11:58:08|ABC@home|URL: http://abcathome.com/; Computer ID: 63620; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|proteins@home|URL: http://biology.polytechnique.fr/proteinsathome/; Computer ID: 60061; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|rosetta@home|URL: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/; Computer ID: 927066; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|boincsimap|URL: http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/; Computer ID: 129290; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|Leiden Classical|URL: http://boinc.gorlaeus.net/; Computer ID: 51487; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|SHA-1 Collision Search Graz|URL: http://boinc.iaik.tugraz.at/sha1_coll_search/; Computer ID: 39054; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|The Lattice Project|URL: http://boinc.umiacs.umd.edu/; Computer ID: 22926; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|superlinkattechnion|URL: http://cbl-boinc-server2.cs.technion.ac.il/superlinkattechnion/; Computer ID: 25561; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|climateprediction.net|URL: http://climateprediction.net/; Computer ID: 894540; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|Rectilinear Crossing Numbers|URL: http://dist.ist.tugraz.at/cape5/; Computer ID: 48557; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|Docking@Home|URL: http://docking.cis.udel.edu/; Computer ID: 11432; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|Einstein@Home|URL: http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/; Computer ID: 1635007; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|lhcathome|URL: http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/; Computer ID: 9750402; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|NQueens@Home Project|URL: http://nqueens.ing.udec.cl/; Computer ID: 9957; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|orbit@home|URL: http://orbit.psi.edu/oah/; Computer ID: 14324; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|QMC@HOME|URL: http://qah.uni-muenster.de/; Computer ID: 111986; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|ibercivis|URL: http://registro.ibercivis.es/; Computer ID: 36733; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|SETI@home|URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 4629943; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|Spinhenge@home|URL: http://spin.fh-bielefeld.de/; Computer ID: 142167; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|SZTAKI Desktop Grid|URL: http://szdg.lpds.sztaki.hu/szdg/; Computer ID: 299000; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|Enigma@Home|URL: http://www.enigmaathome.net/; Computer ID: 9402; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|malariacontrol.net|URL: http://www.malariacontrol.net/; Computer ID: 111501; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|PrimeGrid|URL: http://www.primegrid.com/; Computer ID: 73398; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|GPUGRID|URL: http://www.ps3grid.net/; Computer ID: 15568; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|uFluids|URL: http://www.ufluids.net/; Computer ID: 90441; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:08|World Community Grid|URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 670209; location: (none); project prefs: default 18.11.2008 11:58:09||General prefs: from superlinkattechnion (last modified 02-Apr-2007 21:13:52) 18.11.2008 11:58:09||Host location: none |

Yes they are fine. BOINC uses a system of long term debt (LTD) to make sure each project gets it's fair share of your CPU. So you will only have some of them on your computer at any one time.

/Bengt,
----------------------------------------Except for the project at bottom of list, the others have nothing to do with WCG. I see a projects listed there that have no work or require special hardware, thus wont give work. You main problem is though that 25 projects in default will allow 4% per project per day thus your client will not be collecting work until the scheduler determines your computer can handle it. Because of the different run times and depending if your computer is on 24/7 you will in fact often see situations where only 1 project will take your computer for longer and with CPDN included, it might be that soon your PC will be doing nothing else. Their tasks can take weeks or months. Suggest you go to the projects tab of BOINC manager and select some project and disable them to create some scheduler sanity. Then visit their websites and learn whether you wish to volunteer for them. You have an array yhere of humanitarian, medical research, mathematics, climate, physics and several i dont even know what they are. Could be card games. cheers

They will all run eventually.
But you need to think hard about what you want to contribute to. Contributing to everything waters down your contribution so much that it has almost no effect. I strongly recommend that you detach from projects that don't interest you. Most contributors to World Community Grid contribute exclusively to World Community Grid. That way, we help as much as we possibly can. |

Ok I see your good point.
----------------------------------------But WHAT is then the exact difference between WCG and the other projects I am running. Wkipedia states: about WCG Using the idle time of computers around the world, World Community Grid's research projects have analyzed aspects of the human genome, HIV, dengue, muscular dystrophy, and cancer. The organization has so far partnered with nearly 400 other companies and organizations to assist in the work and has over 410,000 registered user accounts. That looks pretty much like the others on the project list http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html Thanks for all info /Bengt [Edit 1 times, last edit by bdp003 at Nov 18, 2008 10:25:02 AM] |

/Bengt,
----------------------------------------It's about whether you wish to dilute your contribution or focus. WCG has 5 and soon 7 or 8 running under 1 roof is the difference. If you want to know more than what the limited picture tells in the wiki visit the Research pages with current and completed projects, link above. Set the project weight at the Device Profile to e.g. 500 for WCG (default is 100) and your client takes in the long run care that 20-25% of your spare computer time goes here with your 25 projects presently selected. Project Weight/Resource Share is the measure used by BOINC to distribute the CPU cycles, not necessarily daily, but over a week, month, year. What's meaningful is by concentrating on few projects they have more chance of finishing sooner. ciao

Hello bdp003,
Here is a website that gives you a good overview of distributed computer projects: http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html Lawrence |

I don't know if you picked this point up. If you only allocate 1 hour per day to each of 24 projects and the task now selected for one of the projects takes 24 hours to complete, it will take 24 days to complete the task. If that project has a requirement that the task must be returned in 14 days in order to get credit, you will not get any credit for completing the task. It is mathematically possible to crunch for too many projects and get no credit and solve no problems, if you spread yourself too thin.
This challenge gets worse if you do not actually generate 24 crunching hours per day (some computers only run at 70% output). I too suggest that you research the various projects and determine how you want to use your computer to help others. You can focus on science, physics, astronomy or health, etc. We, of course, suggest that you stay involved with WCG, by setting your project weight as Sekerob suggests above. |

Not quite so Astrolab. BOINC continuously computes resource allocation, how much used and more and compares that to deadlines. It will stop fetching work as soon as any job is in trouble and will try to finish the trouble job or until the scheduler knows the threat has been removed. The downside is, once your client is in EDF (Earliest Deadline First), it's got a knock on until all jobs in queue are not under deadline thread. Very strange behavior is observed at times.
----------------------------------------The bad part with 60 minute switches is, not quite because BOINC normally switches only at checkpoint saves, that you get many project swaps, loosing minutes a day just on disk I/O. I've got it set to 240 minutes. Cuts down on the swapping. With Leave In Memory other bad conditions can arise, particularly if RAM constraints exist. If you like to know more on the scheduling logic dig into the documentation... if you can find it ;>). ciao
