For the processor usage tab in the Boinc manager preferences, I've changed the default to 100% (without problem).
----------------------------------------However, in the memory usage tab are there different recommendations for the boxes relating to maximum memory usage? Why is it necessary to restrict memory usage when WCG is set to run at lowest priority – or does the priority relate to CPU usage as opposed to memory? |

Hello Baywhale,
All the various limits that BOINC can set are needed for special cases. Ordinarily, everything can be set to 100% without any problems occurring. But there will always be somebody with special needs. The most common problem is heat in laptops. Looking at the long list of conditions that can be set in BOINC is likely to give people the wrong idea and make them think that they need to worry about all this. Most people don't need them. There are 2 settings for memory.
----------------------------------------- Idle and Use(Work). Idle you can set as high as you like, who'd know or care unless running other background programs. - The Use(Work) setting is of slightly higher importance. Some like to set it low and reserve the rest for image rendering video streaming, gaming and what not. What BOINC will do is, that if it hits the allowed amount, say 50% of 512mb RAM, it will pause 1 or more jobs and then reports a "waiting for memory" in the BOINC Tasks Tab window. - On Gaming. BOINC 6.2 has a config feature (requires file editing for now), that allows to insert programs at which BOINC will pause completely and automatically until these programs are exited. Overall, the idea is that crunching must be unobtrusive so that members do not annoyed with it at any time. It's anyway for 99.9% as the sciences only use "spare" resources. Ah yes, the defaults for the different pre-set profiles you can find here: http://worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17033
