Believe the inglese expression is "smooth as a babies bottom". Left the cc_config.xml untouched, all data / project files preserved.
----------------------------------------Bummer on UAC, but if installed as a secure application service, it should not shut it down unless being an admin. cheers

Not so smooth here.
After installing, the computer locked up entirely for two minutes. Completely frozen. No explanation for that yet, but I have some more testing to do. The first time I exited BOINC Manager and chose "kill science", it worked (despite UAC). When I started it again, it couldn't start the service (and told me so). But when I repeated the exit test, it gave no warning, but didn't stop the service. Explain that! More results coming later. |

Much weirdness.
The oddness with the "kill science" option is reproducible. It behaves differently when BOINC Manager is launched by the installer. Also, the "kill science" option is presented even when BOINC Manager isn't connected. The startup delay is confusing. Tasks show as suspended, but can't be resumed. I thought there was a fix for this on the way? For now, I'll chalk the freezing issue up to a hardware coincidence. But if it recurs, it will need a closer look. |

Saddened for the message on the other post, I thought of sending back on that.
----------------------------------------For me no problem, 2 new options work very well. Désolé pour le message sur l'autre forum, je pensai renvoyer sur celui la. Pour moi pas de problème, les 2 nouvelles options fonctionnent très bien. ![]() |

Hallo all,
Just updated from BOINC 6.2.25 to 6.2.27 on Windows XP-home & Windows Vista-home. Both updates went fine. Stopping and starting Boinc on XP works as it should be: fine. Stopping and starting Boinc on Vista made me a little confused. Stopping is possible when one starts the Boinc-manager as an administrator. To restart Boinc one have to look for the services and manually start Boinc.exe. After that start the manager and make a connection again. Did I something wrong? (Can Boinc be restart more easily?) I think the unprotected mode – as a used on the 6.2.25 – is more the way I like BOINC. Have a nice day, Path7. |

The security model of Vista is preventing the stop/start of the boinc service. Due to the bug reports above, Berkeley is refactoring the manager so that the code to stop/start the service will reside within a separate executable. If you are on vista with UAC enabled, then when it attempts to start or stop the service you will see the UAC dialogue. If you grant it permission, then the service will be started or stopped. If you are not on Vista (or one of its relatives) or if you have UAC disabled, then you will not see the UAC prompt and the service will be stopped/started as you expect.
Once again - thank you for your testing! We hope to have the version with these changes soon. |

So got round to installing this version on the Vista Quad.
----------------------------------------Install as my first post, this time taking "protected, all users". UAC is ON, always has been: - Exit the Manager offered to close the service, when ticked, it did not do so. The service kept running, no UAC pop-up. That said, this was in admin mode. - When using the Advanced "Shut Down connected client" it shut down the service, but both the Task and Project window did not update appearing as if nothing happened but for the timers stopping. The shield appeared on the systray icon to signal that no client was attached to the manager. - In hopes, did the "select a computer" to see if the service would restart. It did refresh the task/project views finally going blank, but did not restart the service. Exiting the manager and restarting it did not launch the service. No UAC notice either. Did reverify it is on and sure enough on it was (one never nows with Billy G). So far the Vista "Wow" experience.

Hello Knreed,
Thanks for your reaction. With all my attempts to stop and start Boinc I did not see an UAC dialogue at all. The only window popping up was when I tried to (re)start Boinc under mine own account. Telling me I didn't have the administrator rights to start Boinc. I'm interested in the next release of WCG-BOINC. Have a nice day, Path7. |

I got a BUNCH of errors on a Rice workunit using the 6.2.25 beta (can't post in that thread since it's locked). For anyone that might be interested, it was WU R00216_ a1cc2a65acc2edb574a6d8ab94fc9d8c_ 03_ 7--
I'm running Windows XP Pros SP3, AMD Athlon 3000+ single processor. Here's the top of the error log: <core_client_version>6.2.25</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> - exit code 1282 (0x502) </message> <stderr_txt> Unrecognized XML in parse_init_data_file: computation_deadline Skipping: 1227773205.000000 Skipping: /computation_deadline wcg_seed 663333247 Unhandled Exception Detected... - Unhandled Exception Record - Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) at address 0x00412436 read attempt to address 0x00000014 Engaging BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger... ******************** BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger Version 6.1.14 .... This was my first problem with the 6.2.25 beta BOINC client. I guess I'll put on 6.2.27 and see how it goes. |
