An article I recently read on cnn mentioned a project like world community grid called ProcessTree. Of course, it was back in 2000, so I sure hadn't heard of it :P. It was supposed to use a model that allowed people to run it in the background and get paid, which I find interesting. Getting to the point, does anybody know how it died? I'm just curious :P.

Paid grid computing networks usually fail very quickly. There simply isn't any money in it. If you are going to pay for computing power, it is usually more cost effective to build a dedicated farm. Yes, it's expensive. But trying to pay hundreds of thousands of people is both more expensive and a whole lot more complicated.
Volunteer grids are a great free resource, but there simply isn't a revenue stream, as many failed attempts show. |

Hmm. Yes, I have to agree with you, their just aren't enough businesses that would back such an idea, particularly in 2000.. But then again I don't know, I think it could have a fair shot now if it were backed with advertisements too, because the GPUs do a heck of a job now, and the processors.. Of course, my computer isn't a fine example to go on
