Just showed up last task, that the progress started dropping back down a percent or two or sometimes 40% or more.... i aborted the unit, thinking maybe it was a problem specific to that unit, but my new work unit is doin it (in small incrememnts).... Is this a new way to attempt to calculate the actual progress? Thanks for your help.

Have you turned off your CPU in the middle of this somewhere and restarted? Every now and then a checkpoint is taken. When the computer is restarted, it will resume at the previous checkpoint.
----------------------------------------If the CPU progress % changes slightly, it could just be refining its calculation. If the time to completion is changed, which is also an estimate, then the percentage to completion could also be juggled. WCG is a lot more accurate than some projects I have seen. Some are off by a factor of 50, and tie two days queue up with something that only runs a couple of hours. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- never mind about the below .... that would be for CPU% Could it be that the BOINC throttle is not set at 100%? It is easy to check. In the advanced view, Advanced tab, Preferences. At the bottom see use at most [100.00]% CPU Time. If it is not 100%, the BOINC throttle works well enough, but wanders around, as you may have seen. It may be an absolute requirement on some laptops, where heat is more of an issue. Most desktops can safely run flat out, but should still be checked yearly for dust buildup.

Hello Jack007,
Progress is a 'best guess'. Whenever the program decides it is going down a blind alley and backs up to try a different direction, it will wipe out the progress made while it was going down the blind alley. So it is normal to see progress going up and down. Different projects behave differently, but in general most projects use 'non-deterministic' algorithms with an unknown amount of work to be computed. We can make a surprisingly good guess based on statistics, though. Lawrence |

Uhm,
----------------------------------------i do have it at 60% but that has been consistently it's not been restarted in middle, my progress percent goes up and then back down while i'm watching it it's like its showing an error so it jumps back to start that section again. i have no idea, but that's just the impression i get (oh and yes it is a laptop and yes it's about heat so i leave it there) when i get my quad core upand running then we'll see soem results ![]() |

----------------------------------------that makes sense, but i've done several fightaids work units and never noticed it before....right now it's going between 51 and 50 percent... whatever, as long as itgets done. Thanks for your reply (and the first one to reply in case i didnt' say it) ![]() |
