I would imagine that some results for projects (like the Human Proteome project) all end up in the same place anyway, so if you've already joined one, then there isn't much sense in joining the other. You're 100% correct, there isn't much "sense" to it. But that's only a part of it. This forum is just now really getting started. The level of competitiveness, energy, and excitement is what makes a forum (and a project) interesting on a day to day basis. This forum is set to go into high gear any time now. It's the members who ultimately give the forum it's personality. Jump in and mix it up with us. Your computer won't give a damn. But you sure as hell will. Welcome aboard. Take a good look around at the teams. You are bound to find a flavor that you like. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 26, 2005 1:41:59 PM] |

Here is the reason I left UD and came to the WCG . What it boils down to is that UD, with forethought, threw away months of everyeones comptuter time just because they could not get their act together.
----------------------------------------They did not have new work units available so they just re-ran the same ones on the unsuspecting users computers for months on end. And when the contributors figured it out, they would not answer any questions. I believe that the WCG does not hold its members in such complete contempt. Here is my last post from that above forum: I joined this UD project 11 May 2002. Since then I have accumulated over 18 years of CPU time and turned in over 37,000 results. Currently I am running 12 nice sized computers. Most of them are used exclusively for crunching; all run the agent 24x7 365. Since May 2002, I have been ignored and yanked around ….e.g. had smallpox automatically added to my profile by Grid.org etc. I tolerated this even though I know of others that have quietly quit UD due to these heavy handed tactics. Now a group of volunteers has figured out the latest (known) of these manipulations. UD has knowingly perpetrated a ruse and wasted the last 4 months of my computers and prevented them from being used in the search for the cure for other diseases. If you add it up, that is about 4 computer years. If one looks at the number of computers that Grid.org has prevented from working on real problems for these 4 months, it must be staggering. Think about it; your son or granddaughter may die because a new drug will be made available 4 months too late. Why did they do it? I cannot think of any justifiable reason to do such a thing and they have failed to respond to all questions about it for three weeks now. It is for this latest indignity that I have moved my computational capability to another medical project. While this particular deception may be over soon, as the most honorable professor at Oxford indicated it should be, you can never be sure when the next sham will start; if it has not already. I know that many, if not all, of you are willing to tolerate this behavior in the hopes that progress will soon be made; I wish you the very best success on this and all other projects. I however, find it unconscionable, irresponsible and intolerable and so it is with sadness that I bid you volunteers, the real contributors and “good guys”, a fond goodbye. “Over and Out” I just jumped over there and took a peek. I am not sure if they ever answered any of the questions around this issue. <==Edit ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by BuckShot at May 26, 2005 2:44:51 PM] |

I'm truly sorry you guys got hung out like that. The techs/admins here are really pretty cool. They have their anal-retentive moments from time to time, but sometimes I think I LIVE in some kind of moment. Besides, if they get out of hand we can always call for reinforcements from TribalWar.com ![]() ![]() Seriously, it's a good place to hang out and have some fun while doing positive work for the rest of humanity. We have an ecclectic mix ranging from flat-out geeks to dyed-in-the-wool sociopaths. But they are all good people with a sense of humor (well, most of the time). So, welcome to our world. Take a while to get to know the place before you make a decision about joining a team. It's more important that you find the right team for you, than it is that any particular team gets a new member. ![]() |

It's more important that you find the right team for you, than it is that any particular team gets a new member. ![]() I entirely agree with the above. ![]() Having been with Grid.org for some 18 months, I left for three reasons. 1. They knowingly wasted the time and processing power of their members without once offering any explanation or apology. 2. Certain large teams, even a few individuals, were allowed to dictate the running of the forums. 3. The spiteful and vindictive nature of certain team captains/members. My advice, for what it may be worth, stick with WCG. ![]() |
