BOINC help(earlier version) needed

[WCG] BOINC help(earlier version)

I completed a cleaning & maintenance(reset memory, reset CPU with fresh Arctic Silver, blew out with compressed air) on an older Win98SE unit, which had been freezing while running BOINC v 5.8.18(after running flawlessly for quite some time). I decided to load/run v 5.10.30, which loaded just fine.I was able to attach to the project. However,it states "waiting to contact project servers" at this point....huh? Under the projects tab(advanced view) it reads "scheduler request pending..." There is nothing under the other tabs except the message tab, which reads "5:01:06 AM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 371520 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks5:01:11 AM|World Community Grid|Scheduler request failed: Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA certificates"

-I can connect to the internet
-Have set to run always/Network activity always available
-Can connect to WCG site
-When I try to connect to project again, states I am already connected.
-This unit is hard wired to a router...resetting the router hasn't helped(6 other units run fine off this same router)
-It has been like this for 5 days now,,,,grrrrr

I am at a loss here as the program just won't take on work and start processing. I would appreciate any help/advice/suggestions. Thanks in advance

Re: BOINC help(earlier version) needed

Hello bbrcat!
As said in your messages it seems that you have a problem with your CA certificate. It is probably because it is too old (not surprising since you installed an old version of Boinc). It can also happen with the correct certificate if the system date is not correct, but this I cannot see since you cut the date from your messages.

Why haven't you installed the version of Boinc which is current in WCG and that you can find there?
The fact that Win98 is not mentioned on this page is because WCG no longer supports it officially, but as far as I know 5.10.45 still works in Win98.

Cheers. Jean.

I recently had a W98 machine. While 5.10.45 did run, I was getting about a 50% error ratio on WU and of the 50% that were errors, I was getting 25% of those that were terminating towards the end of the WU. I even had a WU that ran with over 20 hours of run time then errored out for no points. That machine is now retired.

Re: BOINC help(earlier version) needed

Possibly you ran into the memory limits wall, single core I suppose, but that's now academic.

Whilst WCG no longer supports and tests the science applications for this 10 year old OS, there was as admin word that the present versions of projects could probably be able to run on W98 for a year or so since the August 1, 2008 announcement . Am not up to speed if BOINC 6.2 is tested for this obsolete OS, but there is no need to get it since the new version is mostly for new and future OS features and multi core PCs.

Re: BOINC help(earlier version) needed

Again, thanks for the help ! We all know that Win98 is an obsolete OS but I still use it on this one last unit, as it holds special meaning for several reasons...it shall remain Win98 for me smile
