Does checksumming happen even if boinc-manager is turned off?

Hi all,
I read quite a few of the community FAQ's as well as did search but still came up naught. I am running boinc 6.2.12 (which is not supported)

but still I have a very basic question. I have put

<checkpoint_debug>1</checkpoint_debug>

in cc_config.xml file. Now does boinc-manager need to be up in order for that checksumming to happen or should it be happening even just having the client running,

It should but don't have any idea if it does or does not. If there is some FAQ or somewhere where this is documented please point out the same as well.

Re: Does checksumming happen even if boinc-manager is turned off?

Check Summing and Check Pointing are quite different things. The former is a verification that the file is in proper state and used during file transmission. The Check Pointing is always done, the <checkpoint_debug> line for the purpose to actually print them out in the message log. The function of Check pointing is to allow a recovery if the job was interrupted and the printing for those who want to choose the best moment to shut down a computer or to check if a job is actually making progress. WCG has jobs that do them every minute, but like HCC they could on slower machines even be an hour apart towards the end of the task.

cheers

[Edit: No BMgr does not have to be up at all. It's a one time re-read as Jean mentions below, which could even be forced by using the boinccmd.exe command line tool. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Boinccmd_tool:
boinccmd --read_cc_config

Re: Does checksumming happen even if boinc-manager is turned off?

Assuming that you do want to see when checkpoints are taken and to make sure that you don't miss the next one, have you asked Boinc to reread this new config file? Otherwise it will not take the change into consideration until its next session.

To force Boinc to reread this file, from the Advanced view of BoincMgr select "Advanced", then "Read configuration file" (or something close to that, mine is in French right now). From this time new checkpoints will be listed in the message log.

Cheers. Jean.

Note: Sekerob is right about HCC checkpoints, but FAAH is about the same and HPF2 is even worse. DDDT and Rice are the only projects which take frequent checkpoints currently, so be patient. smile
