I'm sure this ground has been plowed before, but I'm going to rehash it anyhow. I recently got a "please come back" email from WCG because I stopped contributing 2 months ago. One statement from the email is "If you stopped contributing because the grid agent was using too much of your computer resources, then you should consider running it as a screen saver only." That is exactly what I would like to do, but maybe I'm going about it all wrong. Where it asks in My Grid "Do work while computer is in use?", I have it set to "No" and to Do work only after computer is idle for 3 minutes. Even so, the task manager always showed the agent as running all the time, even when it is in use (so the screen saver is not running, of course, and it does make a noticeable differance in computer performance. This is my at-work computer and I don't want to slow it down. I leave it on 24-7, so there is plenty of crunching time available. If I'm doing this all wrong, please advise on the correct procedure and I'll gladly come back on board.
Thanks. maultechnology (AKA Hoosier) |

Hi and welcome back,
----------------------------------------Can you please as first check go to the BOINC manager Activity menu and see if "Run Based on Preferences" is selected. Also check in your taskmanager if a little program boinctray.exe is running. It senses the mouse and keyboard activity. Can you confirm you have installed the 5.10.45 WCG package of BOINC. What OS are you on XP/Vista? ttyl.

Hello, and thanks for your response.
Yes, the "Run Based on Preferences" is selected. I do not see a "boinctray.exe" in the taskmanager. The 5.10.45 package in installed. I am running XP-Pro. Unfortunagely, the agent is still running even though the computer is active and the Screen Saver is not running. I've been crunching since the UD cancer project days and want to continue, but I need to resolve this situation in order to do so. Thanks again. maultechnology |

Hi,
----------------------------------------Can you check the program folder of BOINC to see if boinctray.exe exists there or anywhere. Why it's not loaded for some is not sure, but it runs for me on XP and Vista. You can manually start it and tell us if it makes a difference. A reinstall might possible awaken this required helper app. WCG is now advancing on the customized and further debugged 6.2 release and. It's not the Berkeley recommended 6.2.19... we're a number of point releases further now so stand by if we cant resolve. It will be beta released in a little for member testing. cheers

I searched the entire hard drive, and boinctray.exe is not there. I uninstalled the WCG agent and re-installed. It is still not there.
Thanks for your help. maultechnology |

There's a way to 'unpack' the installer to get the boinctray.exe file. Find the installer pack, copy it to a temp directory and run it from a command window with as "wcg_boinc_5.10.45_windows_intelx86.exe -a". subdirs are created and one of them should have the file. Copy it to the BOINC program directory and start it manually to see if it work as designed.
----------------------------------------Why it does not install is a riddle to me, but that said, from own experience I had a bout at the Berkeley Developer forum over this "critical" file not always installing. From 6.2.x it's forced to install.

What is the filename of the installer pack? Is it in the BOINC folder?
Thanks. maultechnology |

You need to grab the file you downloaded or download it again (My Grid page, right top, has the link)

Grab which file? There are 44 objects in the BOINC folder, plus many more in all the sub-folders.
Thanks for your assistance. Sorry if I seem kinda dense..... ![]() |

I'd never dare think that with the densest material(s) known being iridium and osmium... depends on the moment in time which is more.
----------------------------------------Okay, so right hand top of your My Grid page says: Put the file in a temp directory an re/run this installer from a command window with -a, so "wcg_boinc_5.10.45_windows_intelx86.exe -a". This will unzip this into the program components and should include the boinctray.exe file. Put that file into the BOINC program directory and start it manually and observe what happens. ttyl
