I'm hoping a Windows techie-type out there can help.
I'm running Windows XP Pro on a dual-core machine T2600 @ 2.16 GHz with 2 GB of RAM. About two weeks ago, each work unit started taking about twice as long to complete, except Rice, of course, which took the same amount of time but only netted about half as many points. My other machine doesn't have this problem, so I know it isn't the work units. I've run all the system diagnostics I can get my hands on, and nothing wrong is apparent. I didn't purposely change anything, and the only change I can think of is that maybe a Windows update made a difference. Has anyone seen this before? Is there something I should try to make sure my system is behaving properly? |

Hello wchoff,
The first thing to check is CPU Utilization for the WCG applications using Task Manager. The second possibility is to wonder if your system might be slowing the CPU clock to lower heat dissipation because of a failed fan. Try Task Manager (Ctl-Alt-Del) first. Lawrence |

The second possibility is to wonder if your system might be slowing the CPU clock to lower heat dissipation because of a failed fan. ... or of too much dust accumulated in the vents. You might also check that the power management options have not changed. Boinc running at the lowest priority is not triggering the full power mode when nothing else is running. Cheers. Jean. |

The CPU test showed that each process was taking >40% and <50% of the CPU, as normal. The fan seems to be in working order. My power scheme did mysteriously change to something called 'Timers off (Presentation)', which must have happened when I was presenting something early last week. That's the prime suspect right now. I'll let it crunch for a while and report back after a few units have finished.

I noticed the same thing on my Thinkpad. I spotted this thread yesterday and I changed the power setting and now appears to be back to normal. All because I made a presentation that lasted an hour and a half while not plugged into a power source. :(
Thank you Lawrence for the tip. JB |

Several units have been crunched since my last post, and things are moving faster. The power management settings were definitely to blame. Thanks to all those who helped with this problem.
