I'd like to figure out how to make use of my graphics card for crunching in addition to the work already being done on that machine by its CPU's.
----------------------------------------I've installed the newest Nvidia drivers for my card as well as the latest BOINC client but I just don't see where I get to include the GPU? Any tutorials out there? Thanks. :) ![]() |

WCG does not have any project. if you want to use your graphics card for additional crunching go to folding@home (http://folding.stanford.edu/). they have projects for specific GPUs from NVIDIA and ATI. Check out whether you have one of those.

Are there plans: Not that we know and usually the public does not learn until it is ready to launch.
----------------------------------------That said, WCG invites any scientist/research group that has a distributable, computation intensive project with humanitarian objective that could run on GPUs for proposal to WCG. Given that the CUDA/GPU portion of BOINC is still in development in collaboration with one project, it will be some time before anything could come through. Given the resources required to launch any project in monetary terms, WCG hosts projects for free, it has to last longer. No point in engaging when done 25 times faster (the theory) and not taking 2 years, just 1 month.

GPU calcs are not precise...and until the GPU has a double precision, there is no need for the GPU calcs! |

GPU calcs are not precise...and until the GPU has a double precision, there is no need for the GPU calcs! Lets not be snobs. There are plenty of calculations for which single precision is good enough. But only the project scientists know enough to decide whether or not their problems can be solved using single precision. GPU calcs are not precise...and until the GPU has a double precision, there is no need for the GPU calcs! This was true a few month ago, but it's not the case anymore. Both ATI (RV770 chip in Radeon 4850/4870) and NVidia (GT200 chip in GTX260 / GTX260) support double precision arithmetic. Also, BOINC support for Windows is now working. http://hothardware.com/Articles/ATI-Radeon-HD...RV770-Has-Arrived/?page=3 http://www.ddj.com/hpc-high-performance-computing/210102115 The main problem is that developers are not familiar with the massively parallel architecture & programming, and the tools are still a bit rough at the edge. The beauty of GPU programming being that the whole application does not need to be rewritten, only the usually tiny part where most processing time is spent. A GPU enabled version of Autodock (FAAH / Dengue Drugs) would certainly allow those projects to complete much faster and attract / retain many crunchers. I'm not a gamer, but would be willing to buy one of those boards just for WCG crunching if that was an option. I really hope WCG is working on it, as other projects have now shown it's possible, practical and very effective. |

Oh, I wish that were true.
However, converting a program to be massively parallel is not easy, and is not always even possible. |

Respectfully I would disagree with the logic of your statement as to agree with it would lead us all to think that by using old 286's and making a project last for many years would be desireable. I would think that even if it took 3 months to set up a project that would have two years of PC time to complete but one month using GPU's that it would be the smart way to go. Add in the 3 month lead time, the one month to complete and you get six projects done in two years vs one just using cpu's After all, isn't the point here to accumulate as much data as quickly as possible to try and cure these diseases quickly?
