System tray

Is there a way (or will there be a way) to make the System Tray icon disappear? I would like to have WCG running but reduce the ease with which users can investigate WCG.

Re: System tray

Hello astrolab,
Fiddling with the System Tray is the sort of thing you have to use Google for. I do not recommend hacking your OS into such a non-standard variant.

But it is easy to keep BOINC out of the System Tray. Install BOINC from your password-protected local account as a Service. Then BOINC will always run in the background no matter who is signed on. Copy a link to BOINC Manager and paste it on your Desk. Then you can call up BOINC Manager whenever you sign on and control the BOINC client running as a Service.

Search through Start Here for more detailed instructions about service installs for your OS. Also, consider using BOINCView to control multiple computers with service installations, instead of running from computer to computer.

Any questions?

Lawrence

Re: System tray

Thanks for the reply. I was actually thinking of the many products that ask you if you want to install an icon to the system tray and wondering if that option was available/possible?
There are a lot of computers that do not have security and use only one userid (doing it wrong is very highly regarded), so Windows boots right to the desktop. Adding a secure user, albeit a good choice, then would cause the machine to ask for the user which just annoys the user who is waiting for the desktop to appear.
If the computer has only one user, then there is no need to install to any other/all users, so the simplest idea (not necessarily the simplest to implement) is just to drop the icon from the system tray, since hiding it is only a stopgap. The computer does not appear to have changed in any way and the user can't interfere/investigate with what WCG is doing, since the user is not be responsible for WCG.

Re: System tray

It's possible to run BOINC without installing as a service and not have an systray icon or open window. See FAQ: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=20859#170209

Re: System tray

Just so I get it right and assume that I am not installing as a service.
Normally BOINC installs in the Startup folder using "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boincmgr.exe" /s

If I edit that shortcut and change it to "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boinc.exe" --detach

then the system tray icon will disappear and BOINC is running. I would have to do a RUN on BOINCmgr.exe to see what was going on (if I delete the entry in the start folder).

Edit to correct syntax of Boinc.exe command

Re: System tray

Right, astrolab.

Instead of starting up BOINC Manager (which shows up in the System Tray) and having it start the BOINC client boinc.exe, you just start boinc.exe all by itself. Any time you want to look at it running in the background, bring up BOINC Manager. The easy way is to put an icon for the manager on your desktop, but if you do not want others to see it, then use RUN instead.

If you put the BOINC client in the start up directory for All Users, then this is effectively the same as a service install for non-password protected systems.

Works great once I realized that the parameter was --detach not /detach. Thanks
