Okay, after reading all the feedback on another site about electric bills skyrocketing which didn't make sense to me, so being i have an ammeter and l33t math skills i decided to see for myself:
Equipment: DSA-600 amp clamp calibrated at essco and a calculator. Computer: Homebuilt XP1800 with antec truepower 330 watt psu. Procedure: built breakout cable so i could isolate the 115v feed from the return for an accurate amp reading. Put PC power cable through breakout cable with clamp. remember kids Power is equal to Volts times Amps. 115vac is the constant. Results: Booting up PC: .99A which is 114 watts Windows with WCG running: 1.04A or 120watts BTW ran this a couple of hours and it stayed pretty steady. turned off WCG: .92A 0r 106 watts So WCG draws 14 watts per hour on My work PC. at less than $0.05 per KwH (masselec http://www.nationalgridus.com/masse...rates/4_res.asp ) that is about $6 a year if I ran it 24/7. Cliff notes: It cost's about the price of 1 supersized McDonald's Meal a year to run WCG. So when recruiting and you hear this kind of concerns, you can reassure them it is all nonesense. |

You could even use that to convince them what a good value proposition is. It's like a $6 donation to a good cause that probably does as much good as a much larger financial donation would to the actual institution. I mean, it'd cost them a couple hundred to buy your computer, even if it only meets the minimum requirements. With WCG, you both get to use it for only $6/year more than usual (because I do run my PC 24/7).
And if they complain that the $6 isn't tax dedcutible (because you know someone will), hit them with some more math: $800 for donated PC * .27 (or around there for whatever your tax bracket is) = $216 800 - 216 = 584 $584 > $6 You're saving them $578 dollars. That's 96.33 years of running WCG. And my logic makes as much as sense as any argument they can make about how it uses more electricity, right? |

Not sure of specific tax laws, but if it works like when you do buissiness out of the home, it would go something like: $2000 PC used 4 hours for personal use and 20 hours a day for WCG which is probably fairly accurate with a home PC. .83 x 2000 = $1600 write off. |

This covers it pretty well as far as comparing the cost of running WCG as opposed to leaving the computer on but idle. Graham posted about a method of computing electricity costs at:

It's all fun and games until you get audited just because they want to know how you arrived at your deductions...not that they'd find anything wrong with my return ![]() kudos though for the myth busting and the (potential) tax ramifications...
