Out of memory error

A DDDT job just received an error message that said

Unhandled Exception Record -
Reason: Out Of Memory (C++ Exception) (0xe06d7363) at address 0x004B5181

First time I have received this error on either of my computers.

Any idea what caused it?

If you need more information from the result log, please let me know.

Re: Out of memory error

Hello captainjack,
My first idea is that it might be a long time since you have rebooted and some program might have left a lot of memory in use. Could you describe your system to us?

Re: Out of memory error

The system is a 533 mhz celeron, 512 meg memory, running Windows ME. It is running the Avast virus protection software.

And yes, I do usually leave it running for weeks at a time crunching away on the grid work units.

Re: Out of memory error

Hi,

With that memory constraint you might want to look at the Swapfile/Virtual Memory settings. Ideally is should be set at free expansion but at least 750mb (1.5 times RAM). Here's a link to matrix showing the requirements per project. http://worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17855

Windows 98/ME suffer from substantial memory leaking so over time they slow down when running none stop. Weekly soft boot recommended.

Consider to run only Nutritious Rice f/t World and Help Conquer Cancer. Very light on systems. Selection can be done via My Grid > My Projects.

Offtopic: Obtain the Microsoft free PageDefrag utility. Don't know if this works on Windows ME, but it sure reorganizes the swapfile and it's location for better system performance.

ciao

Re: Out of memory error

Windows ME is no longer officially supported, so you will probably have increasing problems in the future.

From an economic perspective, trading in this computer for a newer model may give such large savings in your electricity bill that the upgrade pays for itself.

Something to consider.
