petehardy,
You asked for information about my system: Here you go: MB = ASUS P5WDH Deluxe Memory – 2 x 1 OCZ Reaper 1066 CPU - Q6600 SLACR G0 HDD 2 x %00 Gb SATA II WD5000 Video – low end Nvidea 7600 GS PSU – PcPower & Cooling 750 CPU Cooler – Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme with this fan Panasonic Panaflo FBA12G12U1BX 120 x 38mm Fan Ultra High Speed With RPM Sensor I lapped the bottom of the CPU Cooler; applied some Artic Silver 5 (yeah I know there's some stuff that's better now but I don't care). Temps idle / 100 % load after 60 mins CPU Voltage = 1.38 Memory Voltave 2.1 ( specified by OCZ) Now, I've got to warn you, if you try this trick, don't blame me if you wipe out a CPU / MB / or other components! I have had this system clocked up to 3.7 Ghz, but it requires to much over volting on the CPU. If you are truely interested in OC'ing a machine, I'd suggest going to some of the sites on the net where folks do a lot of OC'ing / moding of their systems and learn ; read ; learn; read ask questons; tinker a little bit (safely of course) and see how it all works. I'm pretty happy with a 3.4 Ghz Q6600 (I would be happier at 3.7 but I'm not going to push it and wipe out a North / South bridge because I couldn't keep things cool enough.) But this is running a full Ghz higher than stock, and it's on stock voltages (well, kinda) and it's a 40% OC. Hope this helps. ---Barney |

Barney,
----------------------------------------Thanks a lot, I'm amazed at how durable these Q6600s are, I'm going to start planning my next build based on your info. I hope that other crunchers read this post and act on it. I've kinda been stuck on AMD since the K7 came out. I just built a Phenom 9600(not as good as the Q6600) I'm hoping that they(AMD) will come out with a faster chip and give me an easy upgrade. I'm not sure what I'm talking about here (had too many beers). Keep up the good work. Pete ![]() ![]() "Patience is a virtue", I can't wait to learn it! |

Pete,
There are a lot better choices these days... I would likely not put the q6600 into the same MB that I have (actually, it's out of production so that helps). I'm afraid right now I'd be inclined to wait until the Intel X58 chip set is out... it may be that these new chips will tollerate the Q6600... and if they don't then there are other X45 / X35 MB's that will.. and the prices will all start dropping. Right now you can get a Q6600 for about $175.00 or so.. I'm helping a bud of mine design / build a new system... for some specific things he wants.. but we are convinced waiting until late 4Q 2008 or tail end or 2Q 2009 is our best bet. I'd suggest to start following some of the review sites: Toms Hardware AnAndTech HardOCP Overclockers.net Extreme Overclocking.net Water-Cooling.com |
